หิริคือความละอายต่อบาป เป็นเหตุที่ทำให้เราสมาทานศีลด้วยใจตนเอง หากดวงนี้มีมากพอ เราจะตำหนิตัวเองได้โดยไม่ต้องรอให้คนอื่นตำหนิ เป็นหนึ่งในเจตสิกฝ่ายกุศล 7 ดวงที่ใช้ประจำ ได้แก่ สติ ศรัทธา หิริ โอตัปปะ อโลภะ อโทสะ และตัตรมัชฌัตตตา

Hiri is the inner sense of shame at wrongdoing — what makes us keep the precepts from our own conscience, not from fear of being caught. When this quality is strong enough, we can catch and correct our own faults without waiting for someone else to point them out. It's one of the seven wholesome mental factors in everyday use, alongside sati, saddhā, ottappa, alobha, adosa, and tatramajjhattatā.
