Citta (mind) is thought, and cetasika (mental factor) is the feeling that accompanies it as its mood. The two always travel together — wherever mind is, mental factors are there too — and together they drive our behaviour in every moment. Wholesome, unwholesome, and neutral (abyakata) forces all use this same mind-and-mental-factor mechanism to steer what we think, say, and do. Understanding how it works lets us recognise that the thoughts and feelings arising in us are not truly ours, which makes it easier to resist unwholesome states and to make real progress in meditation.

How Can Selling Succeed So Well It Feels Miraculous?
Phra Ajarn teaches that selling successfully can draw on two kinds of power: the power of mind (ceto-vimutti), by resolving firmly in the way Khun Yai once taught, or the power of wisdom (panna-vimutti), knowing exactly what to do. If a person has neither yet, the simplest path is to rely humbly on one’s teacher without showing off one’s own skill, as in the story of Luang Phor Ruesi Lingdam, who kept redoing his work until his teacher accepted it. Recollecting one’s teachers with a respectful mind also generates new merit that reinforces old merit, making one’s trade or business run more smoothly.
Phra Ajarn teaches that a city dweller caught in the cycle of work can increase wholesomeness by cultivating mindfulness moment by moment, since truth only ever appears in the present. Whether stuck in traffic, at work, eating, or in the bathroom, one can anchor on the breath, the center of the body, chant “Samma-Arahang”, recall the Buddha image, or simply rest in a sense of ease — so that mindfulness arises and merit flows in. He suggests posting reminders at everyday spots so as not to lose that opportunity moment by moment.
Happiness in life rises and falls with the amount of merit we carry. Phra Ajarn points out that with little merit, even a favorite, delicious meal loses its taste, and work brings only fear and worry — so we must seek out places where merit gathers, where merely sitting among the group generates merit. The sit itself then guides practitioners to settle the mind at the center of the body, see the crystal Dhammakaya, merge body and mind into one, radiate loving-kindness, dedicate the merit, and close with the customary aspiration.
If the animal has already died, eating its meat is not sinful, because we did not kill it. But if we point out a live animal and have someone else kill it for us to eat, that is sinful, because we become the cause of the killing — the same principle applies whether the animal is small or large. Phra Ajarn explains that intention matters most, but warns that pleasure in the taste of meat is itself a lure that lets craving grow stronger over time.
The teacher explains it is old karma ripening — from having deceived others in the past — and once that karma comes due, the inner voice aligns with the outer deception, making it impossible to escape, since everything unfolds according to a fixed, already-completed karmic blueprint.
Pra Ajarn explains that gossip and slander are a channel the unwholesome uses to draw demerit in, ultimately harming the speaker in this life and beyond. He advises keeping one's distance and directing loving-kindness through aspiration, rather than getting entangled.
Phra Ajarn explains that “distilling” in meditation means separating impurity from purity within body and mind — like distilling water to separate out salt. The coarse impurities rise off through the body as burps or yawns, while deeper latent tendencies settle in the heart, and only sustained practice clears them out, layer by layer.
Yes — a birth date genuinely affects one's fate, because the law of kamma, already completed, can be foretold, while the Law of the Three Characteristics cannot. Life's turning points tend to follow a birthday only in certain years, when the celebration itself becomes a wholesome or unwholesome cause.
Phra Ajarn walks through the Ten Perfections using the image of the mind as a kingdom we must govern ourselves, with the wholesome, unwholesome, and neutral forces all vying to advise the throne. He traces giving, virtue, and renunciation through to equanimity, ties them to the Noble Eightfold Path and the Ten Bases of Merit, and closes with stories, a Q&A on visions and having a teacher, and homework for building a new daily life.
Phra Ajarn frames the twin releases of heart and wisdom, cetovimutti and paññāvimutti, in modern terms: calm (samatha) frees the mind from bad emotion, which he likens to EQ, while insight (vipassanā) frees it from not truly knowing, which he likens to IQ, since the mind holds only two things, feeling and thought. He then leads the sit itself, anchoring the mind at the seventh base at the centre of the body, seeing the Dhamma body of crystal clarity, merging the mind, spreading loving-kindness, and dedicating the merit.
