กฎไตรลักษณ์ · the law of the three characteristics
The law that governs every present moment, compelling beings to make fresh causes whose fruit falls due in time to come. Pra Ajarn teaches that the three characteristics meant here are the three that hold sway over all beings — the wholesome, the unwholesome, and the neutral (while impermanence, suffering, and not-self are what one contemplates in conditioned things). At every moment of life these three contend with one another without pause inside our own heart. Whichever seizes it becomes master of the house and steers our thoughts and feelings to its own ends; and even once the wholesome has taken hold, the unwholesome keeps trying to seize it back. As he puts it: “the law of kamma we cannot choose — we can only accept it; but with the law of the three characteristics we can choose which system we will live in.” This law compels us to take a side in each present moment — to side with the wholesome, the unwholesome, or the neutral. Our whole task is to have the mindfulness to catch it happening, and choose. “Understand this clearly and life is lived mindfully in each present moment, with meaning and a clear aim; without it, life is scattered and in disarray.”
