Pra Ajarn explains that the law of karma determines our partner. Though the wheel-turning nurturer-protector tries to help, once the unwholesome possesses us and compels us to be stubborn and lovestruck, it can't be avoided. The way out is to abide in the wholesome system and rely on aspiration to set a blueprint with merit.
Someone asked: does the wheel-turning force, as our nurturer and protector, also determine or choose our partner — who is or isn't suitable for us?
The Law of Karma Determines It
The law of karma determines it, even though the wheel-turning force tries to help us. When possesses our mind, it compels us to be stubborn and lovestruck. Being compelled by the unwholesome this way can't be avoided. We can only avoid it by abiding in system — only the wholesome can help us.
Outside the Wholesome System, the Unwholesome Compels Us to the Point of Life and Death
Whenever we don't abide in the wholesome system, the unwholesome possesses and guides us in all sorts of ways — pressuring and compelling us to be lovestruck, ready to live or die over it. Even the wheel-turning force's efforts to help can't help then.
The Way Out: Abide in the Wholesome System and Rely on Aspiration to Set a Blueprint With Merit
The way out is to abide in the wholesome system, relying on aspiration. When we aspire, the wholesome sets a for us — but merit must be used to build that blueprint, and merit must drive the system to follow it. It all requires merit. Living in the round of rebirth has its costs, too: merit is the currency used to build everything. If we don't use merit, living off old merit, everything unfolds by mere karmic chance, unavoidably.
