Pra Ajarn teaches not to judge the act itself, but to ask whether it brings any real benefit. If doing something leaves the mind clouded rather than clear, merit doesn't flow through it — so choose only what lets merit flow.
Someone asked: hoping for luck, such as buying a lottery ticket hoping their merit might pay off, and when it doesn't win, wondering if they simply haven't made enough merit — and also enjoying watching videos on YouTube of people asking for lottery numbers at trees or shrines, even though not actually believing in spirits, sometimes watching just to learn that spirits aren't frightening, sometimes just for the thrill of it — is this wrong?
Whatever we do, if it wastes time and brings no real benefit, why do it at all? Do what brings genuine benefit — what lets merit flow through. Do what feels at peace to do, and merit can flow through that too, bringing , , and — that's when merit flows through generously. So be selective: choose what lets merit flow, and avoid what brings no benefit and wastes time for nothing. Our life, after all, consists only of , , and the neutral. If merit doesn't flow through an act, it becomes the energy of the neutral instead — but if the mind grows clouded and loses its clarity, then it is demerit that flows through instead.
