The external senses (form, taste, smell, sound, touch) and internal senses (eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind) are the channels through which wholesome and unwholesome forces compete to take over the mind. Restraining the senses, keeping good company and environments, and relying on wisdom and endurance are the way to resist -- and even push back against -- these temptations.

Someone asked about how the external and internal senses work, how they affect the six elements within us, how they cause defilements to accumulate day by day, and how understanding this can help us stay alert and remain in wholesomeness.

How the External and Internal Senses Work

The external senses are form, taste, smell, sound, and touch; the internal senses are the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. The eye draws in form, the ear draws in sound, the tongue draws in taste, the body draws in touch, and the mind draws in mental objects. Three natural forces -- wholesome, unwholesome, and neutral -- are constantly competing to become the "master of the house" within the mind. Whichever force succeeds overlays its own s onto our mind. That's why the thoughts and feelings that arise are often not purely our own -- they are shaped by whichever force has taken hold. This is also why a thought we try hard to reject sometimes refuses to go away: it was never truly ours to begin with.

When unwholesomeness takes over, it stirs things up and draws in negative energy to drag our inner elements down through greed, aversion, delusion, and lust. If the mind isn't ready to be dragged down, it disturbs us instead through the five hindrances. And if we're firmly grounded in wholesomeness, unwholesomeness will use lingering defilements to hold us back from breaking free too easily.

Letting the mind wander unrestrained toward external forms, tastes, smells, sounds, and touches opens the door for unwholesomeness to steer us toward excessive craving or toward irritation and aversion. The more the elements are thrown out of balance, the harder it becomes to control ourselves, and the proportion of unwholesomeness keeps growing, making life increasingly difficult.

Prevention -- Restraint and Good Company

The remedy is to restrain the eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body -- especially around tools that channel unwholesome forces, such as certain media, reading material, or phones -- and to avoid people who lead us toward unwholesomeness. We should also live in an environment that supports wholesomeness, surrounded by good s who talk with us, brightening our wisdom so we can see the dangers of unwholesomeness and the benefits of wholesomeness. As the proportion of wholesomeness grows, life becomes easier.

Do We Bear the Consequence of an Unwanted Bad Thought?

Someone asked: while chanting, an unwanted thought intruded even though they were certain they hadn't intended it -- they kept trying to push it away but it kept coming back. Do we bear the result of that thought? The teacher answered that if there was no intention to accept it, and we kept trying to let it go, there is no consequence at all -- because the result depends on intention. If we don't accept it, we simply rest in equanimity, neither pleased nor displeased by it.

But sometimes we forget to reject it, and a small trace of defilement may stick, since force is strong -- though side will still help us break free. These small traces accumulate over time, like dust quietly gathering in a house. This is why we need to regularly cultivate and , to clear these defilements.

How Can We "Fight Back" Against Unwholesomeness?

Someone asked: it feels like we're only ever on the defensive -- is there a way to fight back? The teacher answered that fighting back requires wisdom -- like someone who was wronged and can sue for damages because they understand the law and have a lawyer to help. In the same way, meditation practice draws wholesomeness in more firmly, which in turn draws in merit to cleanse defilements. This rests on (): whenever patience is established, we gain a new "armor" -- the more unwholesomeness pushes against us, the more we endure, and the stronger the armor we build for facing greater suffering next time. Wisdom and patience work together: wisdom points the way, and patience forges the armor that grows stronger with each trial.
