A student asked why geniuses tend to love simplicity, seeking the simple path through difficult situations and explaining things so others can understand easily — while ordinary people like us tend to make everything more complicated.
Geniuses Have a Refined Wholesome "Background" Guiding Them
The teacher explained that geniuses have a special background, layers of connection linked one to the next, all belonging to nature — meaning their wholesome proportion is great enough to reach a refined background of vast power, able to clear away the obscuring defilement of and channel through. This background guides them to see how something that looks ordinary and simple is actually extraordinary and important, worth developing further.
This development unfolds in stages: from Basic, to Advanced, to Wonderful, to Secret, to the point where nothing further remains — No More — which is then reorganized into the Basic level of the next tier. This is why geniuses love simplicity: their background reveals that simplicity itself holds the seed of further development. Ordinary people, carrying more defilement and unwholesome influence, are guided by a coarser background that keeps easy things looking difficult.
An Ordinary Person Who Wants to Develop This Way Must Seek Out and Learn Directly From True Geniuses
When asked how an ordinary person could become more like a genius, the teacher explained that we must learn directly from actual geniuses, since we cannot connect to their refined background ourselves — but we can reach the person. This is the same as learning from a teacher who has reached the inner knower: such a teacher can answer any question with total clarity. The unwholesome side has locked away that refined background across countless levels, making it impossible for an ordinary person to connect to it directly; only specific merit can unlock that connection.
The Difference Between Clever and Genius
The teacher explained that wisdom has three levels: wisdom born of listening, wisdom born of reflection, and wisdom born of meditation. A clever person listens and understands deeply, recognizing and drawing in pure energy that cleanses defilement until the inner knower of that subject appears and explains it clearly — some grasp it instantly, others need repeated reflection. Genius, however, operates at the level of wisdom born of meditation — a specific merit that connects to a deep inner knower, able to bring forth knowledge found nowhere else in the world. This may arise from repeated aspirations made in past lives, just as certain arahants aspired to become foremost in particular fields.
