The teacher explains that those who serve as the driving force behind a great merit-making project receive continuous refinement from Nibbana itself and a far more concentrated store of merit, while those who simply join receive merit that unfolds gradually.
A lay follower asked: in a great merit-making project — such as offering a sangha-dana or building a Buddha image — how does the merit differ between someone who contributes without full engagement and someone who devotes themselves wholly until the project succeeds?
How the System of Wholesome Dhamma Works
The mind is the channel and the seat of the system of wholesome . Whenever we do something good, this system guides us to keep doing more good. Each person carries a different store of accumulated merit — someone who once resolved to take part in a great work of merit receives it differently from someone who made no such resolution. An ordinary participant is simply a "beneficiary" of the merit-work, but the person who drives the project to completion is its "creator" — and that person is carried forward by far greater energy, because they must pull themselves away from sensory indulgence and stay focused on the task with and sustained effort. Great works of merit like this are set in motion by Nibbana itself — not something anyone can simply decide to undertake.
The Difference Between the Organizer and the Participant
The person at the core of the project receives continuous refinement from Nibbana the entire time — from the very moment the intention to act arises, through every thought, attitude, and even the obstacles placed in the way. If sickness or misfortune arises to obstruct the work, Nibbana intervenes to keep merit flowing every fraction of a second until the work is finished on time — and it demands total, unwavering commitment. Once the mission succeeds, all of that merit is sealed within a completed sphere of merit, containing the finished blueprint that is the reward of success, along with pure merit-substance that powers it forward. The refined treasure held within this sphere is exquisitely fine and immensely valuable, bearing fruit not just in this life but across countless lifetimes to come.
Someone who joins only on the day of the event receives merit too — beginning from the moment they first think of going, saving up offerings, and every thought, word, and action aimed at getting there generates merit continuously. Once the work succeeds, they too receive a completed blueprint and pure merit-substance — but because their store of accumulated merit is not yet as mature as the organizer's, the result is gentler and less radiant, unfolding gradually rather than all at once. It's like a mentor who started as a lowly clerk and rose step by step through the ranks, gaining sfying success and along the way — but not the immense driving force carried by those at the core of the work. Those who serve as the driving force, when reborn, carry tremendous power — able to found or sustain entire organizations, because their store of merit is more radiant, pure, and potent.
