The teacher explains that the sphere of precepts is a universal tool present in every subtle body, not limited to Buddhists. The heart of precepts lies in intention — the more purely we keep them, the more solid a foundation they become for concentration to develop with ease.
A lay follower asked whether kept by different groups of people — laypeople keeping five, upasakas and upasikas keeping eight, monks keeping 227 — affect meditation practice or practice in general.
Precepts Are Not Exclusive to Buddhists
The teacher explained that they have a significant effect. Even people in the world who know nothing of precepts can still meditate — but knowing precepts helps a great deal, because within us lies , and within that sphere are the spheres of precepts, concentration, wisdom, liberation, and liberated -and-vision — tools present within every one of our bodies, from the coarse human body up through all eighteen bodies. This sphere of precepts is universal: it exists across every nation, language, religion, and people. Even someone who follows no religion at all still carries the same spheres of precepts, concentration, and wisdom. All that's needed is the intention not to kill, not to steal, not to engage in sexual misconduct, not to lie, and not to drink intoxicants — providing safety in these five respects to oneself and others — and the sphere of precepts shines forth, radiant with the merit flowing through.
Intention Is the Heart of Precepts
The teacher emphasized that what matters most in precepts is intention. He compared this to a prisoner in jail: though physically unable to kill, steal, or break any other precept, that doesn't mean they possess — because the sphere of precepts is activated only by a genuine intention to protect oneself and others from harm, not merely by circumstances that happen to constrain one's behavior.
The Difference Between Five Precepts and Eight
The five precepts help weaken the power of unwholesomeness, preventing it from overpowering us into breaking any of the five, and thereby increasing the proportion of wholesomeness. The eight precepts go further, weakening both unwholesomeness and neutrality at once, increasing the proportion of wholesomeness even more. As we dwell within the system of wholesome , the merit flowing through us becomes correspondingly purer and more potent — especially if we keep the precepts with clear awareness of their , checking ourselves point by point to see if any precept has been broken. When none has, a deep sense of joy arises. The teacher recounted a passage from the scriptures describing how a Wheel-Turning Monarch, upon taking the eight precepts, would retreat into a closed room to sit and reflect on the purity of each precept in turn. Finding them unblemished, he felt deep sfaction, and merit flowed through a point of brightness smaller than the tip of a needle, gradually thickening and radiating outward, until an inner voice would eventually exclaim: "Before, I had to protect the precepts — now the precepts protect me."
Precepts Are the Foundation for Concentration
This purity of precepts becomes the foundation for meditation practice, making it easier to clear away and develop and . Simply maintaining awareness at the breath, the body, or at allows this purity of precepts to become the foundation for entering the first jhana with ease. Brightness and then gradually and continuously appear, supported by a called tatramajjhattata — the factor of mental equipoise that keeps the mind balanced and unshaken, forming the basis for stable, right . This entire process unfolds in sequence: precepts are the foundation leading to concentration, and concentration is the foundation leading to wisdom — because as the hindrances lighten and disappear, the mind settles and stabilizes, reaching an ever more refined level of inner knowing, which guides and instructs us to remain established in wholesome states, revealing the dangers at each level of body we pass through, until we can develop toward an ever better and more wondrous life.
