ท่องคำภาวนา "พุทโธเมนาโถ ธัมโมเมนาโถ สังโฆเมนาโถ" ช่วยบรรเทาโรคซึมเศร้าได้จริงหรือ?Can Chanting "Buddho Me Naatho, Dhammo Me Naatho, Sangho Me Naatho" Really Help Relieve Depression?
Pra Ajarn explains that depression has both a chemical dimension in the brain, which needs medication, and a mental dimension, which needs continuous recollection of the Triple Gem to draw in the energy of merit that clears the root cause. Both need to work together — it isn't a choice between the two.
Someone asked whether recollecting the Triple Gem with the chant "Buddho me naatho, the Buddha is my refuge; Dhammo me naatho, the is my refuge; Sangho me naatho, the Sangha is my refuge" can really relieve depression, or whether it's simply telling people to abandon their medication and rely on Dhamma alone.
Understanding What Causes Depression
First we need to understand that depression involves brain chemistry. When the mind is under stress, the body releases stress hormones, and this can build to a state of overload. That means medication should be taken alongside the practice, because medicine addresses the chemical side. But at the same time, the mind needs to be kept in a wholesome state to repair the root cause of what's triggering that chemical release — otherwise, one just keeps taking medication indefinitely without ever resolving anything. This isn't a suggestion to stop taking medicine; medicine genuinely helps. But the mind must be brought into wholesomeness alongside it. When negative thoughts pile up and stagnate in the mind, that build-up is what triggers the chemical release behind depression. Recollecting the Triple Gem is a way of continuously bringing the mind back to something wholesome — the Buddha represents wholesomeness itself, the Dhamma represents truth, the Sangha represents embodied goodness. When the mind constantly recalls what is good, there's no room left for it to drift into negativity.
Many students have gradually reduced their medication to the point of no longer needing it, and this isn't wishful thinking — there is real testimony behind it. Research has found that when someone is in a depressed state, their brainwaves drop to around 20 hertz, while the brainwaves associated with awakened wisdom sit around 1,000 hertz. When we stay continuously connected to that awakened wisdom instead of spending our time on the mind's automatic drift into sadness, our mental state genuinely improves.
One Person's Account
Someone who had struggled severely with depression — to the point of losing control and hurting both themselves and people close to them — had tried many approaches: reading, therapy courses. Each brought only temporary relief. Eventually they heard about chanting the Triple Gem refuge and tried it without expecting much, simply because they'd run out of other options. After seven days of chanting, they noticed fewer negative thoughts and less conflict with their partner. After a month, they began to see changes that went beyond just their thinking. Anger still arose at times, but it no longer escalated into hurting anyone. They continued for three months and began noticing clear changes even in the middle of intense anger.
Why Recollecting the Triple Gem Helps
There are two essential elements at work. One is that is universal; the other is the real, existing beings of wisdom and power. If a being of such power has not yet arisen in the world, or a person has never come to know one, they can still rely on universal dhamma — simply having faith in something is enough. Whatever that object of faith is, even if it doesn't actually exist, what matters is that a sphere of faith is established. Once established as a wholesome sphere, it draws in pure energy that purifies defilements and eases difficulties.
But once a fully Awakened Buddha has arisen — through boundless wisdom, , and compassion accumulated over countless aeons — he teaches people the truth directly, giving them into the mechanisms that govern all beings. When we recollect him and ask for his help, even without an explicit promise, he becomes our refuge, because his compassion is boundless. When we direct our mind toward him, we appear illuminated within him — a genuine mind-to-mind connection forms, and the purifying process becomes fully effective. Without that direction of mind, he can still help to some degree, just not at full effectiveness — because recollecting him is itself a way of elevating the mind into a more refined dimension.
Why Mental Struggles Seem More Common Among Young People Today
What's different now is media. In the past, there were no phones — no constant stream of images and sound for side to use as a tool. Today, images and sound appear in the mind continuously through media use. When these images and sounds are tied to feelings of pleasure and displeasure, joy and sorrow, they become the means by which defilements are drawn in and accumulated bit by bit until they reach a tipping point and produce their effect. This is why the cycle moves faster and more intensely than it did in the past.
