Pra Ajarn explains that giving luck arises when the wholesome possesses the mind and guides one to be generous with loving-kindness — beginning with forgiveness and holding no grudge, then radiating loving-kindness. Both the giver and receiver of luck abide in the wholesome system automatically, and liberation and a stream of merit flow through both.
Someone asked: how do giving luck and receiving luck connect mechanically with the 'backstage'?
Giving Luck Arises When the Wholesome Possesses the Mind and Guides Generosity Through Loving-Kindness
To give others luck, must possess and settle in that person's mind, then guide them to create good causes. The wholesome overlays the body, feeling, mind, and mental objects of a refined, high-quality body, guiding one — as if by one's own thought — to be generous to people and beings with a mind transformed by . We give kind words, offer goodwill, and share what we have — little for little, much for much.
Beginning With Forgiveness, Holding No Grudge
The first thing the wholesome guides one to do is forgiveness — holding no grudge or resentment — because without guarding this point, overlays. When there's mutual ill-feeling, the wholesome first guides one to forgive, then to give kind words and loving-kindness. When loving-kindness arises, the mind transformed by sincere, pure love and goodwill lets the wholesome shape the mind with loving-kindness, drawing merit in to refine and bring about purification and liberation — from a subtle body, liberated into one finer and more radiant.
Both Giver and Receiver of Luck Abide in the Wholesome System Automatically
The purer the merit-element, the more generosity keeps arising, and the mind is shaped to be ever more at ease. The other party who receives is the recipient of luck, the fortunate one, having received love, goodwill, and help. Who is the giver? The wholesome is the giver, guiding that person to let merit flow through. The recipient, sensing their good fortune, has a good mind arise; the wholesome arises too, drawing the pure merit-element through to bring about liberation. Both the fortunate and the giver of fortune thus abide in the wholesome system automatically, with the stream of merit flowing through continuously, bringing liberation from a subtle body to a finer one, on and on. If much merit flows through, there's a chance of liberation into a subtler celestial body, where we come to sense fine, good thoughts and moods, moved by that refined mood.
