Pra Ajarn says to look at the matter of energy — whether it serves to draw in merit or demerit. Wandering that agitates and confuses the mind is the unwholesome side; but recalling images of goodness during sitting to draw merit in can have the wholesome behind it, since images of goodness appearing in the mind can draw merit through.
Someone asked: when we wander during meditation, but on good things like doing good deeds, is it possible is behind it, as if the inner knower is communicating with us?
Look at the Matter of Energy: Drawing In Merit or Demerit
The key point is energy. When possesses us, it serves to draw in demerit; when the wholesome possesses us, it serves to draw in merit. Look at this as the main point: what are they acting for? The wholesome draws merit in to elevate the human body, feeling, mind, and mental objects toward the noble and good. The unwholesome, once possessing the mind, must steer things to cause trouble for oneself and others, to draw in demerit and press the elements down, weakening the wholesome and increasing the unwholesome proportion.
Wandering That Agitates the Mind Is the Unwholesome Side
Wandering that agitates and confuses the mind with this and that is the unwholesome side, because the unwholesome brings images of wickedness — lust, aversion, delusion, greed — to sow confusion, in order to draw in demerit.
Recalling Images of Goodness to Draw Merit In Can Have the Wholesome Behind It
Conversely, while creating good causes — if we sit and the meditation object won't establish itself, the wholesome may have us recall the good we've done, to draw merit in. The wholesome's thoughts appear in our thoughts; when good thoughts are established, merit is drawn in. Every image of goodness we've done well, appearing in the mind, can draw merit through. So one might say that while creating good causes, if the wholesome possesses us, its good thoughts appearing as images of goodness from our good deeds do serve to draw merit in.
