Pra Ajarn explains that all merit is combined into a single sphere, overseen by the chakravartin in turns. Those who have accumulated perfections over a long time may receive a special Sapta Ratna Chakravartin from nibbāna. Compounding merit relies on knowledge and drawing in old merit; a human's duty is to seek merit for the chakravartin, not intrude on his management — fulfilling our own role makes life easier and happier.
Someone asked: normally, the chakravartin already resides at the center of the sphere of merit. If we have many spheres of merit, does that mean we have countless chakravartins looking after us?
All Merit Is Combined Into a Single Sphere, Overseen by the Chakravartin According to Turn
No, that isn't so. All of our merit is combined into a single sphere — it isn't divided into many spheres. But merit ripens in turns, occasion by occasion, and each occasion is overseen by the chakravartin.
Those Who Have Accumulated Merit Over Many Lifetimes May Receive a Special Chakravartin From Nibbāna
For those who have accumulated merit and perfections over a long time, across many lifetimes — when they meditate and reach the , their teacher may lead them to receive a chakravartin from the Brahma world or the celestial realm to look after them. Especially if someone devotes their perfections wholeheartedly, staking their very life on it, they may receive the Sapta Ratna Chakravartin from nibbāna itself to give them special care. Each person may thus have several chakravartins looking after them — this is different from the chakravartin who resides at the center of the sphere of merit, which everyone already has. Someone with special merit thus has both the chakravartin at the center of the sphere of merit, and a special chakravartin who helps more than for ordinary people.
Compounding Merit Relies on Knowledge and on Drawing In Old Merit
Compounding merit involves specialized , which the chakravartin already possesses as a foundation. If we study the kāya teachings, we can learn more methods from the "one who knows" within, and then teach it further. If merit is insufficient, we must draw on the old merit we already have and compound it heavily, by drawing that old merit in. What we ourselves must do is abide in Dhamma, letting lead merit in — merit cannot simply be conjured out of nothing without creating the cause.
The Chakravartin's Duty: Managing Our Resources, Nurturing and Protecting Us
The chakravartin's duty is to manage our resources — the refined treasures within the sphere of merit. He is both nurturer, sustaining us so we never go hungry and always have enough to live on, and protector, guarding us against illness, accidents, and various dangers. He must therefore manage merit, deciding which portion must go first to resolving urgent crises, and which portion to other matters. Because merit must be divided across many needs, what's left for our everyday use is limited — since a portion must always be reserved to protect and guard us.
People Want to Be Wealthy but Can't, Because the Chakravartin Must Reserve Merit for Protection First
People often want to be wealthy but cannot manage it, and so strive ever harder for wealth, bringing themselves trouble. The chakravartin must manage resources to protect and care for us first. Yet before we were even born — at the moment of coming to be reborn — hardly anyone made the aspiration to reach the Triple Gem and devote all their merit and wholesome deeds wholeheartedly. Instead, we spend our precious time chasing after wealth rather than doing our true work.
A Human Being's Role Is to Seek Merit for the Chakravartin, Not to Intrude on His Management
A human being's role is to gather merit for the chakravartin to use in keeping us safe, and to draw in refined treasures for us. But instead of fulfilling our own role, we intrude on the chakravartin's duties, even though we have no knowledge or ability in that area — we don't know where the good "customers" are, we don't know the correct principles of management, we don't know where capable people are to help us — yet we still want to act. So we end up disrupting and interfering with the well-ordered system he has arranged, and instead of gaining more, we gain less, because possesses the mind and directs us to act this way.
Fulfilling Our Own Role and Letting the Chakravartin Manage Makes Life Easier and Happier
We should fulfill our own role well, understanding that as human beings, we must bring merit and refined treasures to the chakravartin. Meditate with a peaceful mind, receiving the stream of merit with and ease, abiding with the Triple Gem and within nibbāna — life then becomes easier. We won't need to carry burdens or search endlessly, work day and night, suffer, or compete with anyone. We should do what falls within our role — since the chakravartin has no physical body to act in our place — taking care of small matters ourselves as the "owner," while the most important task is to go and recruit people to help, so the chakravartin can use them in our place, following the system already laid out for them to carry forward.
