He relays the late master's answer that radiating metta is not self-deception but an accumulation of good feeling that elevates the heart, explains the three kinds of love, and shows why metta's benefit surpasses even generosity — because its light casts no shadow, reaching into the very core of every atom and letting wholesomeness dominate the surrounding atmosphere.

A student brought up a question once asked of the late master: is radiating a form of self-deception, since in truth we don't love everyone that much?

The master answered that metta is not self-deception — it's an accumulation of good feeling

He recounted the master's answer: we are not deceiving ourselves. What we're doing, by radiating love toward everyone, is accumulating that good feeling. Even though we don't yet love everyone in truth, we are gathering that goodness, raising our heart higher and higher, until we reach the level where that feeling becomes genuinely real — capable of truly loving everyone in the world — because it brings us greater as universal love comes to flow authentically from our heart.

Love comes in three kinds — the wholesome must be distinguished from the unwholesome and the neutral

A follow-up question came: some people hold such deep resentment toward someone that radiating metta toward them feels impossible — what's the method? He explained that we need to cultivate the right kind of love, because love in this world takes several forms. Unwholesome love is self-serving, wanting only to receive — loving someone means expecting that person to please us, and if things don't go our way, we grow dissfied, almost as if we're forcing the other person into servitude. Neutral love neither helps nor harms. Wholesome love, by contrast, is full of genuine goodwill, , and sincerity — like a mother's love for her infant, willing to give even her own life, expecting nothing in return. Unlike unwholesome love, which creates distress, because its underlying purpose is to draw in demerit — it's a love tinged with unwholesome intent behind it, self-serving, taking — loving someone while causing that very person distress.

Because we live in this human world, within the cycle of birth and death, we must rely on one another. We came from the same place and must return to the same place — Nibbana. While still circling through birth and death, not yet returned, we depend on each other. Today we might be born as parent and child, siblings, having once helped each other through merit; when we die, we scatter in different directions, and when the time comes to be reborn, we may or may not meet again. If we don't, we must rely on others to become our parents, siblings, relatives, and friends instead. This is where holding sincere love and goodwill toward one another matters — it creates good causes, guided by under , leaving a good impression — the opposite of creating resentment, which, after death, resurfaces as ive hostility the moment we meet again. When we hold genuine goodwill toward each other, meeting again creates a good impression instead, and loving-kindness and goodwill arise naturally. Metta itself is wholesome; once established, it draws in merit. So simply setting the intention of goodwill establishes wholesomeness, draws in merit, and creates a good impression across every life we're born into.

Why metta's benefit surpasses even generosity: its light casts no shadow, reaching into the very core of every atom

In the scriptures, the Buddha spoke of the benefit of metta: the merit from radiating loving-kindness for even the span of a finger-snap surpasses the merit from laying out offerings one yojana long — sixteen kilometers — and giving them away continuously for seven days and seven nights. The reason is that metta arises based in the heart. We simply set the intention and hold love and goodwill, becoming a vessel for that so that metta establishes itself within us. Once established, it displays its own qualities automatically — we are only the one who sets the intention and holds the Dhamma; metta itself reveals its power. Wherever our heart expands to, metta — arising from the heart — shines there too, like flipping on a light switch across every atom of the atmosphere; people, beings, and things alike become bright, reaching into the very core of every atom. Unlike the light of fire or the sun, which cannot illuminate an object's interior and therefore casts a shadow, the stream of metta casts no shadow at all — it shines through every atom of the atmosphere, inside and out, down to the finest detail.

Within every atom, the three natures compete, none fully dominant. When we radiate metta, this wave of goodness and brightness lets the wholesome dominate in every atom our heart reaches. As with the Bodhisatta who radiated metta throughout a forest, making every atom of it — trees, plants, dwellings, animals — shine bright, crops and produce grew abundant, and the spirits that tend the qualities of soil, plants, stone, and minerals all turned wholesome. Once wholesomeness outweighs and the neutral, it can season the soil, water, air, and rainfall to fall properly in season — everything becomes wholesome and good. Beyond that, it also makes it easier for the wholesome within the hearts of beings — normally hard for it to seize its turn — to dominate in the hearts of people and beings nearby, drawing in the energy of merit to refine each of them, making them bright, clean, and pure. It further refines the surrounding environment — soil, water, air, sky, mountains, seas, and oceans — creating conditions where people and beings can live happily.

Metta sustains the world and the cosmos, and is the foundation for jhāna and the perfection of equanimity

Among the ten perfections, metta ranks ninth; the highest, tenth rank belongs to equanimity, one of the seven factors of enlightenment and the supreme factor among initial application, sustained application, joy, happiness, one-pointedness, and equanimity. Every Bodhisatta must cultivate the perfections up to equanimity, but before reaching equanimity, metta must serve as the foundation. Whoever cultivates metta becomes a sustainer of the world and the cosmos, a kind of center for all beings and things — because wherever the heart radiates metta, the brightness at its core becomes the center of the cosmos there. Whoever brings such great benefit to the world and the cosmos comes to be able to draw on the treasures of the world and the cosmos in turn. It's the same as any Bodhisatta descending to be born in the human realm — each must cultivate metta, benefiting the world and the cosmos. Practiced regularly, metta can lead to the attainment of the second jhāna, becoming the basis for the third, the fourth, and higher jhānas, making the Dhamma easier to attain. Dying after attaining the second jhāna leads to rebirth in the Brahma realm, enjoying a long span of bliss, before returning to human birth — having benefited the world and the cosmos, with the chance to attain the status of a universal monarch, able to draw upon the treasures of the world and the cosmos. This is the immense benefit of metta. It also brings benefit to those who cultivate it directly, giving them a radiant complexion and making them beloved by both humans and devas. Among the ten perfections, metta falls short only of equanimity — so we should diligently cultivate it, for its benefit knows no limit.
