The true state of things can only arise in each present moment, never in the past. Using mindfulness to observe body, feeling, mind, and mental objects lets us see the three natures taking turns as the mind's "resident," so we stop blaming people and see through to the real cause instead.
Someone asked for an explanation of the phrase, "the state of truth arises in each and every present moment."
The nature that constitutes truth can only arise in each present moment — it can never arise in the past. Whatever belongs to the past becomes merely content or information about the , but the actual state of truth is something that can only appear in each present instant. We must therefore rely on to observe it. The Buddha taught us to observe body, feeling, mind, and mental objects. When we fix attention on feeling, we perceive which nature has entered and become the "resident" governing the mind. When we fix on mind, we perceive the thoughts of that nature. When we fix on mental objects, we perceive the emotional qualities belonging to that nature. In this way we can perceive the natures that come to govern and command all humans and all beings, simply by observing body, feeling, mind, and mental objects.
Once we understand this underlying truth — understanding the causes and conditions behind everything that unfolds — we understand that the three natures of phenomena lie behind the arising of everything. With this understanding, we see through to the root cause whenever we observe people and beings; we no longer take offense at any individual, no longer blame this person or that person, but instead see that every life carries all three natures behind it. When nature takes hold, it compels harm and destruction, creating trouble for oneself and others. When the neutral nature takes hold, it wastes our time on a life without real substance, squandering resources without producing any benefit. Only nature continually supports, guides, advises, and teaches people and beings to live rightly, leading them toward , success, and the fulfillment of their aspirations.
Understanding this, we can live our lives correctly, guided by the wholesome side, rather than following the unwholesome or neutral sides. This is precisely why coming to know the true state of things in each present moment is so essential.
