Wandering spirits (sambhavesi) exist everywhere; there's nothing unusual about encountering one. When we sense their presence, treat it as a reminder to cultivate loving-kindness and dedicate merit often — once the wholesome is established in the mind, brightness spreads throughout, and all friction dissolves.
Pra Ajarn explained that wandering spirits (sambhavesī) exist everywhere — every house, every alley, every street. There's nowhere they don't exist. Some people encounter them, others don't; to perceive one another requires a karmic connection. What we should do, on sensing a spirit's presence, is to spread . Note, too, that some people with karmic results connected to intoxicants or drugs, or who once revered spirits, may see illusory images that aren't real, arising from a stain that deceptively creates such visions.
See It as a Reminder, Not Something to Fear
Looked at positively, this can serve as a reminder to cultivate loving-kindness and dedicate merit more often. The moment we remember, we cultivate loving-kindness; once loving-kindness is established, it's like flipping a light switch — brightness fills the entire house, and whatever friction existed between people dissolves completely. We come to regard one another with a wholesome mind. The wholesome finds its opening, and our loving-kindness clears away all that friction; gets its chance, and the mind of the wandering spirit, too, gets its chance to settle within that brightness, receiving merit and gaining and liberation. They come to feel goodwill toward us in turn.
Cultivate Loving-Kindness and Dedicate Merit the Moment You Remember
Pra Ajarn advised cultivating loving-kindness and dedicating merit often — the moment fear arises, do it right away; whenever you remember, do it immediately. Every time you sense a connection to them, take it as a reminder to build good causes and connect with the wholesome within you. In that moment, the Triple Gem within us shines bright, and we ourselves shine at the center of nibbana; the stream of giving-merit from the depths of nibbana flows through the brightness of our mind. When it's like this, there's nothing to fear at all, because nibbana is countless beyond measure — a small wandering spirit can do nothing to us. Having little merit themselves, they must rely on those of us with abundant merit. Life within samsara is a matter of mutual support; don't regard anyone as an enemy — look upon them with sincere, pure goodwill, and the Triple Gem will shine bright within us.
