The teacher explains that our lineage of elements and dhamma consists of countless refined bodies — celestial, brahma, and every level of dhamma-body — all of which depend on the human body. Every good deed sends merit flowing through and purifying the whole lineage, and he stresses that good friends and a supportive environment are the two most important things in navigating samsara.
Someone asked what is meant by "sāi thāt sāi tham" — the "lineage of underlying elements and bodies."
The Lineage: Countless Refined Bodies Belonging to Us
The teacher explained that each human being has their own refined bodies existing across different realms — the celestial body and its refined form, the brahma body and its refined form, the formless-brahma body and its refined form, up through the coarse and refined gotrabhū dhamma-body, and the dhamma-bodies of the path and fruit of stream-entry, once-returning, non-returning, and full arahantship. This entire chain is our "lineage of elements and dhamma." Within each of these dimensions there is not merely a single body, but countless bodies, depending on how mind and mental factors combine and take shape.
Every body within this lineage depends on the human body. When the human body creates the causes for good deeds, every body along the entire lineage receives the benefit. The human body is therefore the most important of all — the one every other body relies upon and hopes in. That is why every body in the lineage works together in tiers to help the human body overcome and the neutral. Once the human body can abide in wholesome dhamma, it draws in a stream of merit and treasure that flows through, purifying every body and every sphere along the entire lineage. We are, in fact, never alone — countless bodies within our own lineage stand ready to watch over and support us, together with countless Nibbanas offering their support as well. It is only that conceals this truth from us.
Good Friends and a Supportive Environment: The Two Most Important Things
The teacher emphasized that nothing matters more, in dwelling within the cycle of rebirth, than these two things: a kalyāṇamitta — a good spiritual friend — who supports the wholesome, and an environment that supports the wholesome. The moment wholesomeness becomes established, a stream of merit arises, together with treasure and a completed blueprint; purification and liberation follow continuously, the proportion of wholesomeness within us grows, and the strength of the unwholesome and the neutral diminishes. A good friend and a fitting environment help us break free, continuously throughout the day, from the countless layers of ignorance that enclose us.
He explained that life is, in every moment, an act of liberation. Liberation depends on two things: () and liberation through wisdom (paññāvimutti). Liberation of mind relies on giving, morality, and meditation — the spheres of morality, concentration, and wisdom already present within us, serving as our tools. The spheres of liberation and liberating then carry out that liberation: the sphere of liberation frees us from unwholesome im, while the sphere of liberating insight leads us toward a better, more excellent, more wondrous life. All these tools already exist within our own sphere of dhamma. Having such tools yet failing to use them beneficially leaves us with nothing to rely on — we must be our own refuge, learning to put these tools to good use.
When we abide in morality, concentration, and wisdom, merit flows through, and the sphere of morality shines. We appear luminous at the center of the Triple Gem, and the Triple Gem appears luminous at our own center; both of us shine together at the center of Nibbana. The stream of merit from Nibbana flows in to refine our underlying elements along the entire lineage — every body, every sphere brightens, and merit is stored within the sphere of dhamma belonging to each body. All of this depends on the single human body to carry the burden. If the human body does not understand this, the entire lineage has nowhere to turn — which is exactly why we must seek out a kalyāṇamitta and a fitting environment to help us.
He explained that the unwholesome and neutral natures likewise have their own backdrops, governing in tiers. If we fail to cooperate with side, the unwholesome side will take us as its servant, made to work for it without ever earning its sfaction, no matter how well we perform. This differs entirely from abiding within the wholesome system, where we remain the master of ourselves, able to determine our own way of life, enslaved to no one. From there, we build the five spiritual powers out of , moving toward the fulfillment of our aspirations across our entire lineage of elements and dhamma.
Nibbana Always Holds All Beings Within It
The teacher explained that, in the ordinary course of things, Nibbana already holds all beings at its center. Nibbana consists of every Fully Enlightened Buddha, every Solitary Buddha, and every Arahant — those who have been freed from the cycle of rebirth. Even though they have attained liberation, they have not truly "departed"; they continue to benefit all beings by holding them at their center, protecting them from being seized arbitrarily by the Lord of Death, though this protection still operates according to its own rules. Any being who abides in universally recognized goodness — even one who follows no religion at all, has never heard of Buddhism, or holds no faith whatsoever, so long as they possess a sound, upright conscience — carries the Triple Gem shining brightly at their own center, connected to Nibbana, continuously receiving the stream of merit that flows from it. This principle existed even before Buddhism arose in the world; when the Buddha attained enlightenment, he simply taught it to us with far greater clarity.
