Pra Ajarn explains that if the body disappears but mindfulness still knows it, that's fine — keep going. But if it disappears without any awareness at all, the strength of mindfulness is still too weak, so this method shouldn't be used.
Someone asked: when sitting in meditation reciting "Sammā-arahaṃ" while counting, they feel uncomfortable and afraid of losing count. But switching to a relaxed style — no counting, just recalling merit instead — feels better and more comfortable. Yet sometimes the sense of having a body disappears often. What should be done?
When the felt sense of the body disappears often, check whether is still present. If the body disappears often but mindfulness still knows it — recognizing "oh, I'm still aware, still know myself, the body has disappeared, but mindfulness has grown firmer" — that's fine; keep doing it that way. But if the body disappears and we have no awareness at all, this method doesn't work, because it shows the strength of mindfulness is still weak.
