The teacher explains that mindfulness is a clear sphere that draws in wholesome states, while alcohol and other intoxicants cloud it until awareness is lost; he also answers whether someone with an honest livelihood that isn't prospering may pray for a new one.
How the Sphere of Mindfulness Works
The teacher explained that when mindfulness arises in a person, it is like flipping a light switch in a dark room — light flashes on and suddenly everything becomes visible. Wholesome states are drawn in, wisdom arises, and one wants only to think well, speak well, and act well, so the results that follow are good as well.
But there is one thing that extinguishes the bright, clear sphere of : alcohol. Intoxication actually begins the moment one thinks of drinking. A dark current slowly coats the center of that sphere, like soot building up inside a lightbulb — the light grows dimmer bit by bit. Glass after glass, the darkness deepens until mindfulness can no longer get through, as though a lit room had its switch suddenly flicked off. One stumbles into things, falls, crawls, blind to what is good, and sees only its opposite: the ten unwholesome courses of action. Where mindfulness leads, the ten wholesome courses of action follow; where mindfulness is lost, unwholesome patterns of thought take over instead — enabling killing, harming, exploiting others, theft, robbery, sexual misconduct with another's partner, idle chatter, and lying that stirs up quarrels — all carried out smoothly, almost as if with intelligence. But this is false wisdom: wisdom without , together with covetousness, ill will, and wrong view, all present at once.
The teacher advised that anyone working in a trade connected to alcohol or similar harm should give it up and seek new work. We have abundant merit to draw on for this — one can resolve inwardly: "I wish to leave this unwholesome livelihood; may the power of merit I have accumulated grant me a new occupation that leads my life toward prosperity, a righteous livelihood." Otherwise, wealth gained through a dishonest trade lasts only a single lifetime, while its consequences must be borne over many lifetimes to come.
Training the Sphere of Mindfulness
We train in mindfulness so that we know how to use this tool. To establish mindfulness, we must fix our attention on the point we wish to be aware of. Through repeated, familiar practice, more merit flows through the sphere of mindfulness, strengthening it and enabling it to draw in ever purer merit. Someone who trains little in mindfulness can only draw on this sphere with limited effect, so it must be trained continually to grow in quality. When the sphere of mindfulness is firmly established, brightness appears, the mind becomes bright and calm, and merit is drawn in amid that brightness.
Can Someone Already in a Righteous Livelihood Pray for a New One?
A follow-up question was asked: if someone already works in a righteous livelihood but it isn't prospering, can they pray for a new occupation?
The teacher answered yes — it depends on whether that person's accumulated merit is sufficient. If it is, the new work will gradually grow and prosper. All that is needed is to remain within - system, which will support and sustain the effort. But one must never seek to get rich quickly or grab too much too fast — those who run a business driven by that craving rarely escape unharmed, because unwholesome forces seize upon that very craving as an opening to lead them astray. How much a venture succeeds depends entirely on the merit one has already accumulated; where merit is lacking, unwholesome forces move in and compel a person to speak and act wrongly, since their intent is precisely to harm and destroy both people and all beings. Everything they lead us toward is a trap — one unaware simply believes they are moving toward their goal, when in truth they have fallen into it.
