In this afternoon talk during the 12th ordination retreat, the teacher explains that something operates behind the scenes, guiding our thoughts, and teaches the Ten Pāramīs (perfections) as ministries governing the "nation" of the self — from the perfection of generosity, which needs precepts mixed in, through diligence, patience, truthfulness, resolution, loving-kindness, and finally equanimity, the highest pāramī that lets every other mental factor operate at full capacity.

In coming to this training, the teacher's only wish is for us to know that something operates behind the scenes, guiding us. If we recognize this, it becomes hard for it to control us — hard for it to steer us into quarreling with this person or that, because we'll recognize it happening.

Not every thought is truly ours

We used to think that everything arising in our heart must be ours — our own thoughts, our own words, all belonging entirely to us. Every feeling, every thought, all seemed to be "me." But once we know the truth, it isn't always so. Some nature tries to impose thoughts on us as though they were our own, and we can't deny it since it arises in our own heart. But sometimes we know we didn't think it — we're aware we didn't think it, yet the voice still appears. Even when we try to reject it, that voice doesn't go away — it keeps pressing, guiding, controlling, pressuring us to say and do things that aren't right, luring us into this or that activity to waste our time, our work, our future. Once we know it isn't us, wholesomeness will let us know: "it's here now, it has entered" — we can feel the emotion arising. Sometimes it controls us directly, sometimes it works through others to control us — through a phone call, through media, taking this or that issue and using it to stir resentment in us, using delight and aversion to provoke greed and anger — anger at this person, that person, when things don't go our way, blaming everyone around. All to induce sin into us continuously.

Set the heart neutral: check who is master of the house

Set the heart neutral, cultivate equanimity, and train yourself to remain neutral. If we do, of equanimity (tatramajjhattatā) will keep us dwelling within the system of wholesome states. Our becomes complete alongside this neutrality, free of delight and aversion. When wholesome thoughts and feelings arise, we recognize them — wholesomeness whispers within us, feeling like our own thinking, guiding, advising, warning, and teaching us to know and understand. All that's needed is to remain neutral, with mindfulness, free of delight and aversion, whatever arises. Then check: how does the heart feel right now? At ease? If at ease, wholesomeness is master of the house. If we feel stifled, pressured, in a state hard to bear, unwholesomeness is master of the house — no matter, just stay neutral, and merit will flow in to clear the defilement, gradually bringing more ease. Dwelling with wholesomeness this way requires faith — faith in the of wholesome states, faith in the condition of wholesome states, through staying neutral.

The mechanism of wholesomeness: nature, tool, and energy

Mental factors are the mechanism we can study to understand how wholesomeness works — what mechanisms exist to help us. Merit flowing through these spheres of mental factors induces further merit, so we must study how this wholesome mechanism operates. When a wholesome nature is established, it uses as its tool to induce energy. When wholesomeness is established, Dhamma is established too, appearing as a clear, bright sphere, arising only at the heart. Once established, it induces merit to flow into the brightness at its center. Simply by setting our intent on merit, wholesome energy is established, wholesome nature is established. The controller is nature; the tool is wholesome Dhamma; the energy is the fruit of the system driving the wholesome system, refining our inner elements to be clean and pure, clearing away the defilement that causes obstacles, bringing liberation dimension by dimension, increasing the proportion of wholesomeness.

The Ten Pāramīs are like ministries governing the nation of the self

The Ten Pāramīs are like ministries that govern a nation toward prosperity. If we ourselves are the nation, we must administer these ten ministries: generosity (dāna), morality (), renunciation (nekkhamma), wisdom (paññā), diligence (viriya), (), truthfulness (sacca), resolution (adhiṭṭhāna), (), and equanimity (upekkhā). These pāramīs drive our life toward and prosperity, both worldly and spiritual, throughout the cycle of existence — essential instruments for developing both our and our merit-element.

Generosity needs precepts mixed in

Whenever offering sanghadāna at any temple, one must first undertake , because mixing precepts into generosity greatly increases its fruit. With the five precepts, the offering has a certain measure of benefit; with the eight precepts, even more; with the 227 monastic precepts, needless to say, far more. Our late teacher said: a monk who makes merit the size of a fist receives merit the size of a mountain; a layperson who makes merit the size of a mountain receives merit the size of a thumb. So the perfection of generosity must have precepts mixed in to gain great benefit.

Renunciation is the foundation of wisdom

Precepts form the base for renunciation. Precepts refine our mind to be pure, bringing and liberation into subtler inner dimensions, making the cultivation of renunciation easier, since precepts already carry us to a certain subtle dimension. Renunciation means freeing oneself from sensuality to more easily reach pure celibacy. Renunciation carries us from coarse dimensions into subtler ones, through the wish to be free from sensual desire; Dhamma becomes the sphere that refines us, freeing us from the coarse dimension of sensuality into subtler dimensions. The subtler the dimension, the more powerful the knower who presides over it. Renunciation is therefore the foundation of wisdom — to gain wisdom, renunciation must carry us into liberation within subtler dimensions, reaching the inner knower whose knowledge grows ever deeper. Wisdom arises from that knower, letting us know and understand until vision arises, and vision gives rise to inspiration to change our life for the better.

Wisdom must precede diligence: the Hitler analogy

Wisdom must come before diligence. We've probably heard that Hitler said: kill off anyone who is diligent but stupid. It's like ordering a subordinate to clean the floor — mopping and scrubbing the lower area until it's spotless, then looking up to see the upper area filthy, so they clean and mop it too, and dust falls back down onto the floor they'd already finished, forcing them to redo it. Hitler, seeing this, grew furious at such people. This is why wisdom must precede diligence — the pāramīs we study must be studied in the correct order: generosity, morality, renunciation, wisdom, diligence, patience, truthfulness, resolution, loving-kindness, equanimity — because the first becomes the foundation for the second, the second for the third, and so on, like a staircase that must be climbed one step at a time.

Diligence: the powerful being who clears away obstacles

All these pāramī-instruments drive a clockwise rotation to increase our merit; unwholesomeness drives it counter-clockwise, while neutrality locks it in place, letting it turn neither way. The perfection of diligence is a clear, bright sphere with the power to drive us forward toward our goal. When we're lying about, feeling lazy, and we set our intent on the sphere of diligence, recalling "diligent, diligent, diligent" for a while, we rise automatically. Effort carries with it perseverance in clearing away obstacles, because within the sphere of diligence resides the body of a powerful being — unlike the sphere of wisdom, which houses the body of a knower who guides us; the sphere of diligence houses a powerful being who clears obstacles. The sphere of wisdom's role is only to dispel , but for those who persevere, a powerful being works to correct things for them. It's like an athlete who trains and trains, breaking records through the correction of an inner powerful being adjusting every joint, every muscle, to greater efficiency. Performers must rehearse too; while rehearsing, the powerful being refines and corrects flaws, so that when they perform, the audience is deeply moved — all made possible by these powerful beings. Diligence, therefore, must follow directly from wisdom, because wisdom brings us to these powerful beings, both external and internal. As children, our parents are our knowers and powerful protectors; at school, our teachers fill that role; at work, our boss, with more experience, becomes the one we rely on — call the boss when stuck, and they coordinate everything, and it clears up.

Patience: fortitude is the armor that guards against torment

As we persevere, diligence eventually reaches its limit when we meet suffering. Even with a powerful being helping us, when we face truly severe suffering, diligence alone cannot carry us further — this is where we must rely on the . Patience is endurance, made possible by fortitude (tapo) acting as armor. When we meet suffering and need to push through it, we must endure, and that endurance builds this armor called fortitude, protecting against torment. Suffering is a state that is hard to bear, yet when we can't withstand the torment any longer, patience forges armor to protect against it, allowing us to push through the mass of suffering. Someone who once ate three or four meals a day may find it unbearable to fast while keeping the eight precepts; some can endure but not for two days straight; but some train like forest monks, eating every other day, gradually able to fast one day and skip two, even one day and skip three, all through cultivated patience. Once trained this way, fortitude and armor are already built, so fasting one or two days becomes nothing, because they've already endured three — with the armor already forged, there's no more fear.

Enduring the fight against unwholesomeness: the boxer who refuses to lose

Someone cultivating the perfection of patience is like a boxer cornered in the ring, being battered from both sides, yet whose heart keeps insisting: "I cannot lose, I cannot lose" — even while being pummeled, still refusing to give up. When we face obstacles and are oppressed by unwholesomeness, we stand on the side of Nibbāna: we cannot lose, we must endure. Unwholesomeness uses defilement to grind us down, but we know its defilement has only a limited reserve — endure a little longer, and it will run out; once exhausted, it can do no more. Relying on endurance to resist evil brings merit in two ways: first, merit arises when we do good, and Nibbāna sends merit continuously so that our good deeds succeed, filling us with deep sfaction. Second is resisting evil — without Nibbāna sending merit, no one could resist at all. Whoever wishes to fight and resist evil will have merit sent continuously from Nibbāna until they overcome unwholesomeness, whose energy is finite. As long as we don't give in, patience's inner voice keeps insisting, "I cannot lose," holding the line, and Nibbāna keeps sending merit continuously; as long as we don't lose, unwholesomeness eventually loses, because its driving energy is limited and will run out. The armor of fortitude, once forged through patience, remains with us to face the next challenge ahead. Whoever endures suffering keeps this armor, and even when facing greater suffering later, fortitude forges a new, stronger set of armor. This is why the noble ones can push through the mass of suffering all the way to its end, unlike ordinary people who fear suffering, turn away when they meet it, and dare not face it — the noble ones understand and dare to face the mass of suffering head-on.

Truthfulness: facing suffering leads to truth

The truth of suffering, the noble path, is therefore the essential core used to push through to the end of the mass of suffering. Suffering arises from defilement, and defilement arises from our own past mistakes, caused by unwholesomeness guiding us into wrong thought, speech, and action; once we accept its thinking, it shapes and molds us, inducing sin. Once sin reaches a certain level, it forces us to speak and act incorrectly, giving rise to defilement, which comes bundled with suffering — the fruit of our own past mistakes. When suffering appears, the noble ones dare to face it, and thereby learn of their past mistakes — realizing, "I made this mistake before, and that's why this defilement appeared and produced this result." We must therefore face the mass of suffering, learn and understand the truth of our mistakes, in order to correct them. The mistake itself is the origin of suffering (samudaya); correcting it by facing it is cessation (nirodha); correcting and elevating ourselves is achieved through the path (magga). Cultivating patience gives us fortitude, connecting us to the body of the one who possesses inner fortitude. It's like when an electronic device breaks down, and we call a technician — the moment they arrive, somehow it just works again, without them even needing to do much. That is the nature of fortitude — when someone who has it arrives, problems simply vanish, because they know they cannot win against it. As we cultivate fortitude to push through hardship, our effort must be specific — directed only toward what is correct and good while dwelling with wholesomeness, not the effort of unwholesomeness or neutrality. Patience is endurance in the fight against unwholesomeness. As for the perfection of truthfulness: endurance brings us to truth, because our past mistakes created defilement, and facing them lets us learn those mistakes in order to reach truth, requiring the factors of the Noble Truths to push through the mass of suffering and reach that truth. Truth appears in each present moment; we must dwell in the present to perceive that state of truth. While cultivating patience, the presence of the present moment becomes very clear, because the state of suffering appears, making the clarity of truth very sharp. Once we push through the hardship — the wall of suffering built by unwholesomeness — and break through it, we reach the state of truth, which is one with the Triple Gem and Nibbāna. Breaking down the wall of suffering brings a sense of complete openness, lightness, and ease — reaching the state of ultimate truth, which is Nibbāna itself. We see the truth appearing in each present moment because of our sincerity and purity of heart in pushing through the mass of suffering.

Resolution: the heart becomes one with the powerful knower

Once we reach the perfection of truthfulness, we reach the state of truth where the Triple Gem and Nibbāna reside, and we merge with them as one. The inner voice of one who has reached truthfulness speaks with a single voice: Nibbāna must win. Someone still untruthful will waver and doubt, doubting Nibbāna, and once that doubt arises, the unity of oneness with the powerful knower cannot be established. For one who has become one with the powerful knower, the heart becomes an element of accomplishment — whatever good is set as intent will come to be. This is the reaching of the perfection of resolution: the heart merges completely with the boundless, countless powerful knowers, giving one a clear, supremely noble goal. Once one reaches truthfulness, these powerful knowers guide and teach toward the highest, noblest goal, because the heart has developed into oneness with them — whatever is resolved upon can be accomplished. The perfection of resolution thus has two aspects: first, a firm, supremely noble goal; second, a heart that is an element of accomplishment, able to fulfill whatever is resolved upon, because of oneness with the powerful knower.

Loving-kindness: extending the heart to benefit all beings

Given this, helping people and all beings is well within one's capacity. Following resolution comes the perfection of loving-kindness. When a person has become one with the powerful knower, is firmly committed to the highest, noblest goal, and has a heart of accomplishment, this is like attaining the state of an accomplished being — which has many levels, each capable of benefiting oneself. Once able to benefit oneself, benefiting others through loving-kindness becomes possible too, relying only on love and goodwill. Radiant loving-kindness is established, and merit flows into the center of that radiance. Setting the intent to benefit people and all beings requires only extending the heart — the sacred, pure light of loving-kindness shines outward, dispelling defilement in every particle of the surrounding atmosphere. The three natures contending in every particle reach no victor, because of the accomplished being's presence. When we cultivate this, we too become an accomplished being on a small scale — and this has real effect, not none. Everyone must develop these pāramīs, rising level by level, each level marking a degree of accomplishment; each person differs according to their own cultivation, but all can generate real benefit. Each person's loving-kindness can help sustain the world — its current merges with the great ocean of loving-kindness from every accomplished being who extends benefit to people and all beings. Our own loving-kindness merges with that ocean, benefiting the world and the cosmos. Coolness and comfort arise in our own heart and in others'. We become the center of the world through cultivating loving-kindness. Science tells us that measurement requires relativity — comparing from one position, since the universe is so vast that no fixed position can be determined without reference — it requires contact. When we cultivate loving-kindness, we become the center of the radiating light of loving-kindness at that moment, and the center of the universe, because the light of loving-kindness shines from the center of our heart and expands outward across many universes. Cultivating loving-kindness benefits us by keeping our heart cool and moist, like land that never dries out. But there remains a flaw: when we meet with provocation, a heart of loving-kindness, while gentle, can also be easily moved.

Equanimity: the final pāramī that lets every mental factor operate at full capacity

This is why we must rely on the perfection of equanimity. Equanimity develops the heart to be unshaken, firm as the earth, because the sphere of equanimity gives the quality of the heart stability, unmoved, able to remain automatically neutral — this is the wholesome mental factor called tatramajjhattatā. As the perfection of equanimity develops further, this mental factor grows ever brighter, inducing pure energy — merit — to flow in, so that in daily life we remain unmoved by our surroundings, by sights, tastes, smells, and sounds, or by the provocations of neutrality and unwholesomeness. When the quality of equanimity is well developed, it causes the tatramajjhattatā mental factor to carry quality across each life we're born into. Once it has quality, it allows twelve other mental factors to develop — a calm body and mind, a light body and mind, a gentle, soft body and mind free of harshness, a body and mind fit for work, a nimble, unsluggish body and mind, and an honest body and mind. All twelve are developed to full quality, making it easy to reach the first, second, third, and fourth s. This sphere of equanimity connects to and underlies all the other pāramī-spheres — it is the mental factor that works to bring merit in, enabling the other wholesome mental factors to operate at full efficiency. In each life we are born, once the sphere of equanimity develops with quality, it makes the tatramajjhattatā mental factor luminous, letting the preceding seven mental factors function at full efficiency, which in turn lets the other twelve bring calm to body and mind and entry into the jhānas. The reason we still find this difficult to reach is that each of our pāramīs, including equanimity, is not yet developed enough. Bodhisattvas who are born all carry a strong foundation in all ten pāramīs, and each one reaches the Dhamma because equanimity makes the tatramajjhattatā mental factor luminous, letting the seven preceding mental factors function fully, which in turn lets the other twelve bring calm to body and mind and entry into the jhānas.

Closing dedication chant

Every time we pay homage to the Buddha, let us wake and recall the inner Triple Gem — close our eyes and recall them appearing brilliantly at the center of our being, ourselves appearing brilliantly within them, and both we and they appearing brilliantly within Nibbāna, within the boundless, countless powerful knowers. The stream of merit wells up and flows through continuously, driving the wholesome system to correct and refine our inner elements to be clean and pure. We will be freed continuously from one dimension into another, even while still feeling in the dark, whether we know it or not — the wholesome system works on our behalf, increasing the proportion of wholesomeness within us. As that proportion grows, our life becomes easier to sustain, success and happiness come more easily, and life becomes more vibrant. The talk closes with the chant of refuge in the Triple Gem (the Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Sangha as our refuge) and a dedication: may the boundless power of Nibbāna, together with the merit of the elder masters and teachers, protect and watch over everyone, freeing them from suffering, sorrow, and danger, granting the Eye of Dhamma and full penetration into the knowledge of , along with wondrous treasures accompanying them through every life, until reaching the ultimate end of the Dhamma.
