ผังสำเร็จ: กลไกที่ผนึกบุญและบาปเป็น "ดวง" แล้วนำไปวางบนไทม์ไลน์ชีวิตThe Completed Blueprint: How Merit and Demerit Get Sealed Into a Sphere and Placed on Life's Timeline
Phra Ajarn Suraphong lays out, in careful mechanical detail, how the law of kamma and the law of the three characteristics work together: once an action — whether wholesome or unwholesome — reaches completion, its entire "blueprint" is sealed inside a sphere of merit or demerit, then placed on the near or far timeline of one's life, at which point a countdown toward the moment of reckoning begins. He then leads into determining and knowing body, feeling, mind, and mental objects, Sammā-Arahaṃ meditation, radiating loving-kindness, and the closing resolve.
Meditation practice is essential and vital to every life, because we live under the control of three natures, constantly competing with one another to seize possession and dictate to us. Only nature gives us benefit — , understanding, what is right and good, , and the fulfillment of every wish. Everything good arises from the wholesome nature alone, because the other natures give no benefit at all; if a nature is unwholesome it only brings suffering. We must therefore learn, understand, and train ourselves to dwell within the system of the wholesome nature.
The Core Teaching: Three Parts of "Determine and Know Body, Feeling, Mind, and Mental Objects"
The Buddha taught: monks, you should clearly determine and know body, feeling, mind, and mental objects, in order to eliminate covetousness and grief regarding the world. This sentence is crucial — capable of turning an ordinary person into a noble one. It carries three key parts. The first part teaches that to dwell with the wholesome nature, we must determine. Other natures have no such determining; only the wholesome nature teaches us to determine. Wherever we determine, the mind is placed there, and once placed, we go in to know — this is called "determining and knowing." The sphere of knowing, the sphere of , then arises at the center of our mind.
Spheres of Merit and Demerit: Form and Quality, Inseparable
All phenomena — wholesome, unwholesome, or neutral — can only arise in one place: the mind. Once the sphere of knowing, the sphere of mindfulness, arises, whatever quality we determine arises with it. Determine , and loving-kindness arises. Wholesome qualities all take the form of a clear, radiant sphere — all 84,000 sections of appear as spheres of light. Unwholesome qualities, all 84,000 sections likewise, appear as dark spheres. What differs is the quality or state contained within the sphere, which we name according to its quality. The sphere itself is merely the "packaging" — form; the quality within is "name." Wholesome is a clear bright sphere, unwholesome a dark one — form and quality are always paired, inseparable. When we determine mindfulness, the state of mindfulness appears as full self-awareness, together with a bright sphere at the center of the mind.
Merit Clears Away Defilement, and Problems Grow Lighter
Once this sphere of knowing and mindfulness arises, it continuously draws in pure energy — merit — flowing into the brightness at its center. This pure energy drives the wholesome system, refining and correcting our elements to be clean and pure, clearing away the defilements that cause problems and obstacles. As this pure energy clears defilement, problems lighten; and once defilement is gone, a mass of forms, liberating us continuously from one dimension to the next. The proportion of the wholesome increases while the strength of and neutral diminishes.
Determining and Knowing the Body: From Breath-Awareness to "Rising, Falling"
The second part of the teaching concerns determining at body, feeling, mind, and mental objects, because when the three natures successfully compete for possession, whichever is faster and subtler becomes the "house owner" of the mind. Wherever the mind is placed, the creating of causes happens there. If we rest the mind on the breath, every perception appears at the breath. Before this, we breathed in and out without perceiving anything at all — even though breathing was occurring, we simply hadn't placed the mind there to perceive it. Determining and knowing at the breath is called ; at the rising and falling of the abdomen it's called "rising, falling"; determining any part of the body, or the body as a whole, is called body-mindfulness. Wherever we determine, merit flows into the brightness of the sphere of mindfulness, clearing away the obscuring that spot, entering progressively subtler inner dimensions. Mindfulness automatically shifts into , liberating us from coarse defilements such as — restlessness, drowsiness, doubt, tension, and irritation all grow lighter.
Feeling: The Mind's First Sensor
Beyond the body, we must also determine and know at feeling. Feeling is the mind's first layer, a sensor that perceives which nature has taken possession. If wholesome, the sensor perceives the quality of comfort or happiness — let this comfort serve as the signal for mindfulness to stay anchored to. But if the possessing nature is unwholesome, the sensor — feeling — perceives the quality of suffering, a state that must be endured, and endured with difficulty. When suffering arises, we simply determine and know it — that alone is enough; don't struggle against it. Endurance comes together with austerity, a shield against torment, allowing us to continue determining and knowing. The advantage of suffering is that its signal is clear and continuous, easy to determine. The neutral nature, by contrast, is neither pleasant nor painful — different from the neutrality of equanimity, which still perceives pleasure and pain but keeps the mind balanced.
Mind and Mental Factors: When Thoughts That Aren't Ours Possess the Mind
Beyond feeling, the Buddha also has us determine and know the mind. Mind here means thought. When one of the natures possesses the mind, it brings its body-feeling-mind-mental-objects along with s, and its thoughts and feelings appear in our mind. We're then puzzled — why do we have thoughts we never thought? However hard we try to suppress them, we cannot clear them away, though if they were truly our own thoughts, simply stopping thinking should make them vanish. That's because the unwholesome has reached body-feeling-mind-mental-objects and overlaid its own, making its thoughts and feelings appear in our mind. When the wholesome possesses us, it brings down a body-feeling-mind-mental-objects of higher quality than the human one; when the unwholesome possesses us, it brings down one lower than human, because it wants to press the elements down.
The Purpose: Eliminating Covetousness and Grief Through Equanimity
The third part is the essential purpose — eliminating covetousness and grief in the world. Covetousness is the delight that gives rise to greed, a craving for existence; grief steers the unwholesome to produce craving for non-existence, drawing in demerit together with ruin. The external world is form, taste, smell, sound, touch; the internal world is delight and aversion themselves. We must determine and know with this purpose in mind — not to feel delight or aversion, but to dwell in equanimity, balanced. Tasty, we know it's tasty; not tasty, we know that too — yet still taking reasonable benefit so that life can proceed normally and happily. Whether good or bad, it is all entirely the result of .
The Law of Kamma and the Law of the Three Characteristics Work Together
In the past, those of us who created good causes now receive results that are pleasing and sfying; those receiving unpleasant results in the present did so because they created unpleasant causes in the past. But the law of kamma and operate simultaneously: as the law of kamma draws in the elements to deliver a result, at the same time the law of the three characteristics steers people and beings to create new causes.
The Completed Blueprint: How Spheres of Merit and Demerit Are Sealed and Placed on the Timeline
If people act according to unwholesome causes that bring suffering, harming others, demerit is drawn in together with ruin. Once the demeritorious act is completed, the entire "blueprint" is sealed within the completed sphere of demerit — composed of demeritorious energy suffused with suffering and ruin — and then placed on the timeline of the near life or the far life. The near life means the present lifetime; the far life means the next lifetime, or the ones after that. Once placed, a countdown begins, counting down toward the day the result must be received. But if the wholesome steers us to create good causes, it draws in pure energy — merit — which flows in as a clear, radiant sphere suffused with happiness and purity, arriving together with refined treasures. Once the good cause is successfully completed, we receive our reward: the entire blueprint is sealed within the completed sphere of merit — composed of pure merit-elements suffused with happiness, together with refined treasures — and this blueprint, likewise sealed within the sphere of merit, is stored in to be placed on the timeline of the near life and the far life in exactly the same way.
The Mechanism of Life: Receiving Results, Creating Causes
This is the mechanism of life — receive a result, then create a cause; life consists of nothing more than this. Results come from both the meritorious and demeritorious sides — happiness and suffering, alternating, depending on how much of the wholesome or unwholesome we dwell with. To know this truth, we must determine and know body, feeling, mind, and mental objects — something we must prove for ourselves, teaching ourselves what should and shouldn't be done, learning, understanding, and proving it again and again. We will come to realize the truth appearing in every present moment. True reality exists only in the present, never in the past or future. Knowledge is merely experience arising from each present moment that has occurred; the future is only expectation. We must therefore dwell with the present, learning and proving only in the present.
Entering Meditation: Merging With the Dhammakaya
As we dwell in each present moment, many good things arise. The Triple Gem appears radiant at the center of our being; we appear radiant at its center; both we and it appear radiant at the center of Nibbāna, the center of the boundless knower. Let us take on the feeling of being the crystal Buddha, the crystal Buddha being us — merging our body with his body, then merging our mind with his mind. He attains cessation-attainment, stilling and settling the mind; we do the same. At first, even if we cannot yet see the sphere of merit, simply determine anyway — the mind is the element of accomplishment; determine something good, and the wholesome will fashion that good thing into being through our mind.
Radiating Loving-Kindness to the World and Universe
Having done good in each present moment, we now do good for all people and beings by cultivating loving-kindness, drawing on the heart of a mother filled with love and goodwill for her young child. May the people of the world and all beings be free from suffering and find happiness. Then expand this heart of loving-kindness to cover our home, the village, district, province, country, and neighboring countries, until it covers the whole world, turning it into a crystal world, clear, cool, clean, and pure — reaching heavenly beings, brahma of every realm, and even beings in hell, hungry ghosts, and animals. Then expand further into the atmosphere of the universe, covering countless stars, extending to ten thousand world-systems and a hundred thousand koṭi of universes.
Making the Resolve and Dedicating Merit
Finally, dedicate this merit to the people of the world and all beings, including our ancestors, parents, siblings, grandparents, teachers and benefactors, the deities who help and support us, and every , that we may forgive one another mutually. Then still and settle the mind at the center of the pure merit-element still flowing continuously into the brightness of the mind, still within the Triple Gem, at the center of the utterly refined Dhamma-body of the Great Master Luang Pu, Luang Phor, and Khun Yai Achan, using this auspicious moment to pay respects and make the resolve, fixing a completed blueprint within this radiant sphere of merit, so that life from this point forward, along the entire path of building perfections, may be filled with knowledge, happiness, and purity, and every good and right wish may come to pass — closing with the traditional verse of merit dedication.
