An orb of merit and an orb of demerit sit at the center of every person's body, differing in size according to what has been accumulated. Newly created merit yields only about 10% of its result in the present — most of it is set into a completed pattern awaiting future results. The only way to ease harmful results and reinforce good ones is to abide in contentment and within the wholesome system.
Someone asked about the currents of merit and demerit.
The orb of merit sits at the very core of everyone's body, and its size differs from person to person. If someone's orb of merit is small while their orb of demerit is large, they are born into hardship, struggling to earn even a little. If the orb of merit is of moderate size, they enjoy a middle-class comfort. If it grows larger still, they belong to the upper class — they don't need to chase money; money comes looking for them. This is why the rich tend to keep getting richer and the poor keep staying poor: the current of from a past life blocks their resources. Having never given, they do not receive. That current of stinginess is utterly dark, taking hold completely, pushing resources away and drawing misfortune in — invisible, yet entirely real. When the orb of merit is large and the orb of demerit small, things succeed easily; good luck and helpful people appear, because the current of merit within radiates outward like a radio wave, drawing resources back toward us.
How does newly created merit connect with the old?
Our orbs of merit and demerit were strung together before we were even born — the program was already set from the moment of conception. New merit we create yields only about 10% of its result by drawing up old merit to bear fruit in the present, giving us a sense of ease and , letting wholesomeness stay firmly rooted, guiding us to live rightly, and making it harder for unwholesomeness to intrude. The far larger remainder is set into a completed pattern to bear fruit in the future.
Everything is set in place from birth to death. Each orb of merit or demerit that is due to bear fruit consists of the energy needed to do its work, the resource attached to it, and its completed pattern, all sealed together. Some people's ventures keep prospering; others' keep declining — all according to their own completed pattern. Wanting more than that pattern allows invites unwholesomeness to stir up greed — wanting a lot, wanting it fast — even though one's actual drawing power reaches only so far. Overreaching investment therefore tends to end in loss, because misfortune always lies hidden behind that kind of greed.
How do we ease harmful results and keep misfortune from compounding?
When we abide within system, even when demerit bears its fruit, the burden is lightened. But without abiding in that system, no other system can help at all — and if we instead abide within system, the damage compounds well beyond what the original pattern called for. What matters most is contentment — being sfied with what we have and what we are, applying diligence and in proportion to what is fitting, without reckless overreach: eat little when we have little, eat more when we have more.
The most essential part of giving is cutting through stinginess itself — not hoping for a return greater than the sincerity behind the gift, because giving driven by greed for more merit misses the point entirely. What we are receiving now is the fruit of seeds planted in a past life; everything has already been settled within the orb of , awaiting its turn, largely beyond our power to change. What we can do is live rightly, grounded in goodness, never straying from the wholesome system, and act rightly in the present to design a better future.
