Phra Ajarn Suraphong explains how mindfulness arises and draws in the stream of merit through the seventh base at the center of the body, then offers a simple, relatable image: just as clothes go into the washing machine after a day's work and a bath, the mind likewise needs daily cleansing and purification through the practice of noting.
Phra Ajarn opens with the principle he must always repeat: every life is under the control of three natural systems. Apart from system, no other system offers any benefit — it only brings suffering and harm. The Buddha therefore taught us to dwell in the wholesome system, because it nurtures and guides us toward correct understanding of reality — all , learning, and innovation are, in fact, fruits of the wholesome system, education among them.
The Buddha's Teaching: Note Body, Feeling, Mind, and Mental Objects
The Buddha taught over 2,000 years ago: monks should clearly note the body, feelings, mind, and mental objects, so as to remove covetousness and grief regarding the world. To note means to mark, to specifically designate, so as to come to know — for example, marking the nostrils to note the breath; as air passes and touches the nostrils, the sensory nerves register it accordingly. Mindfulness — clear recollection — can arise only at the mind, nowhere else. It has the character of a bright, clear sphere, and belongs exclusively to wholesome mental qualities; neither unwholesomeness nor the neutral quality possesses it.
The Sphere of Merit: Pure Energy Flowing Through the Sphere of Knowing
Once arises, it draws in pure energy called merit, flowing continuously into the brightness of that sphere of knowing. This pure energy takes the form of a bright, clear sphere, densely filled with merit-substance — and whose purpose is to cleanse defilement. Within that merit-substance also lie refined qualities of form, wealth, , retinue, honor, praise, happiness, and the fruits of the path to Nirvana, all complete within the radiant sphere of merit. As merit flows through us, these refined qualities flow through us too, drawing coarser worldly fortune toward us.
The Stream of Merit: The Coffee-Straw Bubble Analogy
Phra Ajarn compares it to dipping a straw into water and blowing — bubbles rise continuously. Merit-substance flowing into the brightness of mindfulness works similarly, but wells up far more rapidly, forming a continuous stream of merit, a river of fortune. All it takes is noting continuously, without lapse, and we sit receiving that stream of merit and fortune. The more happiness, success, and fulfillment we want, the more diligently we must sit and note, to receive more of this stream of merit.
Merit-Substance Drives the Wholesome System, Cleansing Defilement Away
The merit-substance flowing in drives the wholesome system to refine the elements of our being, cleansing the defilement that clings and anchors us to coarser systems. These defilements are what give rise to , causing difficulty and hardship both in life and in practice. Once merit flows in to drive the wholesome system and refine our elements until they are clean and pure, we are released, dimension by dimension, continuously. Note continuously without lapse — noting body, feeling, mind, and mental objects, or resting awareness on our chosen meditation object.
The Seventh Base at the Center of the Body and Reciting "Samma Arahang"
Our teachers advise us to note at . Recalling this point, an image of two crossing lines forming an X at the center of the body appears — two finger-widths above the navel is the seat of the mind. Wherever we note, the mind goes there, and mindfulness arises right within the middle of the mind, drawing in the pure energy called merit continuously. Noting the seventh base, we may become aware of a crystal sphere representing , or of a Buddha image representing , or both together — the Buddha image seated within the sphere. Then we recite the mantra "."
Samma Arahang: The Name Given to the Perfected Dhamma Body
"Samma Arahang" is the name given to the perfected body, meaning "the One who has practiced well, practiced rightly, practiced so as to be far from all defiling things." When we utter this name, the Buddha image appears — never appearing empty-handed, for he is the true essence of the Triple Gem residing within every person, whether they realize it or not, ever caring for and helping them. He brings together the elements of our being — seeing, memory, thought, knowing, earth, water, wind, fire, space, and consciousness — to refine them into purity, clearing away the defilements. His one wish is that we merge with him into a single unity.
Merging Body and Mind into the Crystal Dhamma Body
Adopt the feeling that we are the Buddha image and the Buddha image is us, merging with him into one unity. Let our entire body become a crystal Dhamma body, radiant, clear, cool, clean, and pure — from head and face down to the feet, all exquisitely soft and gentle. Then merge our mind with his mind as well, by knowing what he is doing: entering ceson-attainment, gathering the mind to stop, to be still. Note "stopped within stopped, still within still, soft, light, at ease." Even if, at first, nothing is seen or seen clearly, that's fine — keep noting, easily and pleasantly.
Each Day, Clothes Go in the Washer — the Mind Needs Washing Too
Phra Ajarn offers a central image: each day, once we've finished our work and duties and taken a bath, our clothes go into the washing machine — and our mind needs the same treatment. It must be cleansed, purified, refined, through a process that belongs to the automatic wholesome system. All we need to do is note, staying continuously aware without lapse; the rest is the wholesome system's job to handle on its own. A human being's only task is to note, staying continuously aware without lapse, easily and pleasantly.
Inner Status Is the Cause; Outer Status Is the Effect
As the sphere of knowing — mindfulness — draws in pure energy to drive the wholesome system and refine our being, we are released, dimension by dimension, continuously. Each subtler dimension we reach holds better resources: purer, more sacred merit-substance with greater power to dispel defilement, along with more valuable refined qualities and more exquisite templates of accomplishment. Our status changes, because inner status is the cause and outer status is the effect — outer status can never change unless inner status changes first.
Loving-Kindness: The Tool That Purifies Our Surroundings and Benefits All Beings
Having cultivated good causes for ourselves, we turn to benefit the world and all beings — both the social world and the natural environment — so the world becomes fit for peaceful living. We rely on , the wholesome system's tool for refining beings and things. It's simple: just note, and set a wish of love and goodwill for people and beings. May all beings who share with us the suffering of birth, aging, sickness, and death be free from suffering and find happiness everywhere. May those with much suffering have less; may those with little suffering be freed entirely. May those with little happiness have more; may those already happy be happier still.
Radiating Loving-Kindness Across the World and Universe
Expand that heart of loving-kindness to cover our home. It shines through every particle of the atmosphere — people, beings, and things within our house all become radiant, cool, clean, pure, and warm — like flipping on a light switch, except this light reaches every particle both inside and out. Extend it further to cover the village, the district, the province, the whole country, neighboring countries, and the entire world, until the world becomes a radiant, cool, clean crystal orb. May earthbound spirits, wandering spirits, sky spirits, celestial beings of every heaven, Brahma gods, formless Brahma gods, and beings in hell or as animals be free from suffering and find happiness. Extend it still further, covering countless stars, out to the boundless universe. Whoever brings benefit to the world and universe can rightly make use of the world and universe's resources.
Settling in the Triple Gem and the Teachers
Gather the mind to stop and be still within the pure merit-substance still pouring forth continuously, and dedicate this merit to all people and beings. Settle the mind in the Triple Gem — the jewel of the Buddha, the jewel of the Dhamma, the jewel of the Sangha — our true essence, caring for and helping us every single moment, whether we sleep, wake, stand, walk, sit, or lie down. Then settle the mind in the utterly refined Dhamma body of Luang Pu, Luang Phor, and the great preceptor — those we must rely on to correctly understand the truth of life. As we recall them, both we and they appear radiant within Nirvana.
Closing Dedication and Chant
Phra Ajarn leads a dedication prayer, asking that the blessings and power of Nirvana, together with the virtue of Luang Pu, Luang Phor, and the great preceptor, combine with whatever merit we have sincerely accumulated since our very first life until now — to refine our body, speech, mind, and the elements of our being until they are radiant, clear, clean, and pure; free from calamity, sin, karmic debt, and every obstacle in life; free from greed, hatred, delusion, lust, , wrong view, craving, and clinging — granting us the Dhamma-eye and full attainment of the three knowledges, the eight higher knowledges, the six supernormal powers, the four kinds of analytical , the eight liberations, and the fifteen conducts, together with strong health and inexhaustible resolve to build perfections toward Nirvana. May all these good wishes come to pass. The session closes with the Pali chant "Sabbe Buddha..." invoking the protective power of the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha.
