The teacher explains that a crisis never arises at random — it comes from a completed unwholesome program placed on our life's timeline, ripening at its appointed time. When we abide within the wholesome system, mindfulness arises together with it, allowing a balanced mind that sees opportunity within crisis; but when we fall under the unwholesome system, fear and greed compound one crisis into an even worse one.
A student shared a teaching that within good there is always bad, and within bad there is always good — with and wisdom, we can see the opportunity hidden within a crisis — and asked the teacher to elaborate.
A Crisis Never Arises at Random — It Comes from an Unwholesome Program on Life's Timeline
The teacher explained that a crisis cannot arise easily on its own — it requires tainted energy, unwholesome karma, to bring it about. Each person carries their own schedule of crises, arising from completed unwholesome programs placed on the timeline of their life. When the moment for that program to bear fruit arrives, its current is released as energy that governs events — whether illness encoded into our DNA from the very first day of life, or accidents and misfortunes, all arising from an unwholesome program releasing its current, drawing the right elements together at that exact moment. The severity depends on the ruinous element held at the center of that unwholesome sphere.
Everyone carries a mountain of accumulated unwholesome karma, but merit continuously protects us, turning heavy into light, and light into nothing at all. A crisis that arises, if we lack system, will draw in an even greater crisis on top of it. We must therefore abide within the wholesome system.
When We Abide Within the Wholesome System, Mindfulness Arises Together with It, Allowing a Balanced Mind That Sees Opportunity Within Crisis
When the wholesome system is established, mindfulness always arises together with it, along with faith and a called equanimity of mind (tatramajjhattatā), which allows the heart to remain balanced and neutral, neither overjoyed nor overwhelmed by grief. Once the mind is balanced, mindfulness guides wisdom to resolve problems; the inner knower guides us as though the thought were our own, allowing us to close the gap that would otherwise let mistakes repeat.
But without the wholesome system, we panic, and the mind scatters with greed or aversion; voice then guides us toward ever greater mistakes. Fear and greed turn opportunity into crisis, layering crisis upon crisis. We must therefore first steady our mindfulness, merging our heart with the Triple Gem as one unity — not merely asking for help while letting the heart drift back under the unwholesome system.
Every System Needs Energy to Run — We Must Continuously Build Merit and Perfections
The teacher explained that no system can operate without energy. The wholesome system runs on the energy of merit; the unwholesome system runs on the energy of unwholesome karma. We must therefore continuously seek merit and build perfections — because if we simply live off old merit until it runs out, we will have no energy left to power the wholesome system that protects us from the unwholesome. Mindfulness is thus the essential key, since it can only arise when the wholesome system is established. Training consistently develops the five spiritual faculties — mindfulness, faith, wisdom, concentration, and effort — which in turn build the five powers, the strength that carries us toward success in everything good.
