Phra Ajarn Suraphong illustrates the difference between mindfulness (sati) and clear comprehension (sampajañña) with the simile of eating rice: sati merely knows that we are eating, while sampajañña tastes the actual flavor of that very mouthful. He teaches how to bring this same fine-grained awareness into every thought and feeling, including truly sensing the state of loving-kindness rather than just naming it, before leading the full sitting practice, merit dedication, and loving-kindness.

Two Halves of Practice: Eyes Open and Eyes Closed

Phra Ajarn Suraphong teaches that practice has two parts: the eyes-open part and the eyes-closed part. The eyes-open part is sammā — maintaining awareness of the body, the breath, our posture, our meditation object, or our thoughts and feelings, staying aware without lapsing at all times. As we maintain this awareness, the sphere of knowing arises and draws in the pure energy called merit, flowing into the center of this bright sphere of . This merit, being pure energy, then goes to work correcting every defilement, lightening it, and resolving life's problems and immediate difficulties.

The Fortunate One: When Right Mindfulness Flourishes, the Triple Gem and Nibbāna Protect Us

When we cultivate , the Triple Gem and nibbāna settle and shine brightly within us; we receive protection and care from system, with nibbāna resolving matters for us in advance. This lets us pursue right livelihood and prosper, becoming truly fortunate people — existing obstacles dissolve, heavy troubles turn light, much becomes little. Earning a living becomes easy, with results beyond our expectations, because a knowing, powerful being works behind the scenes. Wherever we travel, we are protected; we gain in body and mind, love and safety, easy prosperity, and robust health — simply by cultivating right mindfulness.

Without Right Mindfulness: The Unwholesome and the Neutral Possess the Mind

Without cultivating right mindfulness, possesses the mind, pressuring us into actions that bring suffering and harm to ourselves, creating hardship in our work and business. If our work brings suffering, that is a sign the unwholesome has possessed the mind in that moment. At other times, the neutral force possesses the mind instead, luring us toward eating, playing, and wandering, so that we lose the care and thoroughness needed in business or study. Without that thoroughness, we lack time to correct mistakes, and success becomes difficult — because the unwholesome and neutral systems keep seizing control, forcing us to serve their own agenda, while the wholesome side only gets small opportunities in proportion to our accumulated merit and demerit. To progress, we must cultivate the wholesome system until its share increases.

Right Mindfulness as the Foundation for Right Concentration: If We Cannot Do It With Eyes Open, How Can We With Eyes Closed?

Once skilled in right mindfulness, cultivating becomes easier, because both use the same underlying principle. If we cannot manage it with our eyes open, doing so with eyes closed is far harder, because the inner world is unfamiliar to us. When we close our eyes, confusion and drowsiness can arise, and we become trapped within another dimension. We must therefore train in right mindfulness first, so it becomes a support that makes the eyes-closed practice easier, faster, and better. In cultivating right mindfulness, we stay aware of the body, the breath, or the postures of movement — extending an arm, bending an arm, walking, rising, sitting, speaking, conversing — remaining continuously aware.

Clear Comprehension: Knowing Before We Speak, Before We Think — Being Master of Our Own House

True presence in the body means being able to perceive the state of the whole body, relying on — spreading awareness evenly throughout. Wherever we move, we know it there; when we speak or converse, we know it; when we extend or bend an arm, we know it. We should know before speaking, not simultaneously with speaking — aware of every thought, able to restrain it, able to consider before speaking. Even hearing a provocation meant to make us say something, we are aware, and we can choose to speak or not to speak. No one can force us, because we are the master of this house of body and mind. Sometimes the wholesome, sometimes the unwholesome, sometimes the neutral seizes the seat and issues commands to our mind from behind the scenes. We must therefore train in cultivating clear comprehension — the knowing of fine detail.

Tasting the Rice: The Simile That Distinguishes Mindfulness From Clear Comprehension

He teaches that sammā sati merely maintains awareness — knowing only the topic — without knowing the detail of each moment's inner state. Sampajañña, by contrast, penetrates and clearly knows that very state. It is like eating rice: scooping rice into the mouth, chewing, and swallowing — that is only the topic. But going deeper into detail means actually tasting the flavor: eating plain rice and knowing its sweetness, its true savor. We might realize we have never before tasted plain rice this delicious, because we had never actually touched its true flavor, never paid attention and considered each moment of the activity. This penetrating, detailed knowing of each moment's state is precisely what clear comprehension is.

Clear Comprehension Applied to Loving-Kindness: Knowing the State, Not Just the Word

In cultivating right mindfulness with eyes closed, once we are aware and know what we are aware of, if we wish mindfulness to cultivate , we set loving-kindness as the object and then go deeper into its detail — clear comprehension steps in to hold that state of loving-kindness in place, letting it arise at the center of the heart, and we continuously sense this state of genuine goodwill. Our heart then grows steadily more wholesome. Truly sensing the state of loving-kindness is not merely reciting the word "," but actually knowing the felt state of goodwill itself. Mindfulness knows only the topic — that we have directed ourselves toward loving-kindness — while clear comprehension goes deep into what that state actually feels like: how soft, gentle, tender, and at ease it is. This is the fruit of the refined (), already present within the wholesome system; we simply have never paid attention to its detail and so have never perceived this treasure. Some people, striving only to attain concentration or brightness, cannot perceive the state of dharma actually present before them — they can only cultivate mindfulness, unable to develop it into clear comprehension.

The Sphere of Knowing Arises: Aware of the Body, the Breath, the Posture

When mindfulness — the sphere of knowing — arises, the heart perceives its own presence: being present in the body means the heart, resting with the body, knows itself; or we maintain awareness of the breath, or of posture — extending or bending an arm, we know it — spreading awareness evenly to every cell of the body, so that wherever we move, we perceive it entirely. Relying on this clear comprehension, even as thoughts arise, we can direct the sphere of knowing to observe them, however subtle, aware of who is directing that thought, who is inserting it. This requires only sustained, willing attention, aware without lapsing — aware of the body, of feeling (whether pleasant, painful, or neutral), and of mind, meaning aware of all the thoughts being formed, which are not entirely our own — mostly they belong to the three competing natures that seize the throne and think on our behalf.

The Stream of Merit Bubbles Through: Purifying Defilement, Dissolving the Hindrances

As we remain aware without lapsing, maintaining awareness with each recitation of "," enjoying it lightly, with willing, easy contemplation back and forth, the mind clear and cool as if playing gently — yet what actually occurs is real and immensely powerful. The stream of merit bubbles continuously through the center of the sphere of knowing's brightness. Within each sphere of merit lies pure, sacred dharma-elements of great power, dissolving suffering, grief, and every affliction. Whether in practice or in worldly business, merit helps resolve problems, lightening them by purifying defilement — the very energy that drives () to create difficulty. As defilement lightens, obstacles lighten in turn; what was hard becomes easy, what was burdensome becomes light.

Recitation Paired With Visualization: The Buddha Image Layers Within Us

Luang Phu once said that verbal recitation and mental visualization are a pair. As we recite the name "Samma Arahang" — the name of the one utterly free of all defilement — that being arises at the center of our body and heart, never in vain, settling layered within us, Buddha image after Buddha image expanding and merging with us. The true reality is already present at our center, though we cannot see it without the Dhamma-eye; when we cannot see it, we picture instead the Buddha image we already know and remember. Our head becomes the crystal-clear, pure sphere of the Dhamma body; our forehead, eyes, lips, neck, shoulders, arms, chest, abdomen, back, hips, thighs, knees, shins, and feet all become the crystal Dhamma body. We are the Buddha image; the Buddha image is us. We let go of the sense of being merely human, keeping only the sense that we are the Buddha image.

Dedicating Merit to Ancestors and Karmic Counterparties

As we maintain awareness, the sphere of knowing arises and automatically draws in pure energy, and the stream of merit continues bubbling through the center of our body and heart. We then dedicate this arising merit to our ancestors and relatives — recalling our parents, siblings, teachers, and benefactors, the devas who help and support us, our caretakers and guardians, and all beings we may have wronged, our karmic counterparties — asking that we forgive one another and share equally in this merit.

Radiating Loving-Kindness Across the World and the Cosmos

We then generate goodwill for ourselves and all beings: may those with much suffering have less, those with little have none, those with little happiness have more, and those with much have ever more. We expand this loving-kindness-filled heart to cover our home, village, district, province, Thailand, neighboring countries, and the whole world, until it becomes a radiant crystal sphere — reaching the heavenly beings, the Brahma realms, and even beings in hell, as hungry ghosts, and as animals — and further still, across the countless stars and galaxies of the boundless cosmos. Whoever benefits the world and the cosmos may make use of its treasures, as the Bodhisatta of old did, practicing loving-kindness for the world and all beings, becoming a Great Brahma and later a universal monarch ruling the four continents.

Closing Aspiration

In closing, Phra Ajarn leads an aspiration for success to be established in us, now and in all lives to come. May the merit and blessings of our teachers and our own accumulated goodness since beginningless time combine into sacred, potent merit. May we be freed from misfortune, karmic results, demonic obstruction, and obstacles of every kind; may greed, hatred, delusion, lust, , wrong view, craving, and clinging come to an end; may we gain the eye that sees the Dhamma and penetrate the of the Dhamma body; may we be strong in health and steadfast in spirit as we build perfections toward nibbāna. He closes by asking that old wrongdoing be forgiven, and that new merit bear fruit successfully for us all.
