Pra Ajarn explains a simple way to recall merit accumulated across past lives — a single moment's thought connects the mind to that old stream of merit — and points out that old merit is the true foundation, while merit made in the present life simply serves as the 'starter' for the wholesome system to run automatically.
Someone asked two questions: (1) When we try to recall merit from past lives we cannot remember, how does that connection actually work? And (2) which stream of merit hits with the greatest force — merit from the present life, or from past lives?
A Simple Way to Recall Merit
Recalling merit is simple. Just set your mind briefly on the thought that across countless past lives, you have done merit — a little here, a moderate amount there, a great deal elsewhere. Because our mind is already a "perfected element," this thought alone connects it to the stream of merit, which gathers into a bright sphere resting at at . This is the teaching Luang Phor gave in 2007.
Merit Is Pure Energy, Drawn In by Wholesome Dhamma
Merit is pure energy. For it to arise at all requires a wave to induce it — that wave is wholesome arising in the mind. Wholesome dhamma can only arise in one place: the mind, nowhere else. Once it arises, it draws the stream of merit into the bright center of sphere. Even science confirms that waves can convert into energy. The Triple Gem governs this whole system — the Buddha-jewel governs the wholesome system itself, and the -jewel governs the wholesome wave across all 84,000 sections of the Dhamma. Wholesome dhamma only arises when the wholesome system overlays and settles onto our mind — and arises together with that overlay, not on its own. When we train in mindfulness, we're really creating the conditions for the wholesome system to settle in and continuously draw the stream of merit inward to purify our defilements.
From Manual to Automatic
The more we connect with the wholesome system, the more it can step in and refine us — until, eventually, it gains the power to run on its own. We move from doing this manually, to a semi-automatic state — staying aware without deliberate effort, pure energy being drawn in on its own without us needing to focus on it. But to reach that point, we must work together with the wholesome system, drawing in enough pure energy that it gains the authority to govern the human body.
The Strongest Stream Comes From Merit Accumulated Across Lifetimes
Answering the second question: all we can do in this present life is establish the wholesome system and let it begin refining us — how much benefit results depends entirely on merit already accumulated in the past. Whenever past merit is sufficiently abundant, its force in that moment is strong. So the present matters greatly for the future, and the past matters greatly for the present. Do your best now, but understand it can only reach a certain level — if past merit isn't there to support it, and indeterminate forces will be stronger, and even sincere effort may not be enough to overcome them. In that case, we rely on effort, , truthfulness, resolve, , and equanimity — doing what we can and pressing on. The foundations of , concentration, wisdom, faith, and effort accumulated across near and distant past lives need a solid base, built life after life.
New Merit Is Like the Engine's Starter
Old merit is the foundation; merit made in the present simply establishes the wholesome system so old merit can flow in. New merit functions like a car's starter motor — drawing on the "battery" of well-accumulated old merit to ignite the engine, which then runs mainly on the power of that old merit.
Why Continuous Chanting Matters
This is why keeping a recitation on our lips and in our hearts matters so much — whether bathing, eating, talking, walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, keep "" resounding in the mind without a break. Try it continuously for just the first three days. Once the "engine catches," the old merit accumulated across countless lifetimes floods in, and life transforms — moving from semi-automatic to fully automatic, with small effort yielding great results, and problems and obstacles resolving on their own.
Why Old Merit Doesn't All Flood In at Once
Even with abundant old merit stored up, a channel is still needed to draw it in, because the unwholesome side interferes at every subtle level to limit how much comes through. The same is true in reverse: if we allow the unwholesome side an opening — through wrong thought, speech, or action, or consuming media that darkens the mind — accumulated demerit floods in instead. This is why we must keep recalling merit continually, so the wholesome system can settle and keep drawing in pure energy.
Repeating Good Thoughts, Even Small Ones, Has a Great Effect
Even without deep of dhamma, simply reflecting again and again on the good we've done — morning, noon, and evening — is enough. Even just intending to do something good, before actually doing it, is already enough for the wholesome system to settle in and draw old merit forward to help. What looks like a small act carries an outsized effect, because it means the Triple Gem and Nibbana itself descending to help set things right. The key is consistency.
Claiming Time for the Wholesome Side
At any given moment, one of the three natural forces already occupies that time — wholesome, unwholesome, or indeterminate, with usually claiming the most. We need to actively claim time for the wholesome side each day, and because other forces are used to occupying certain hours, there will be some friction as we take that time back — a period of difficulty at first, but worth enduring for the future. For example, when evening comes, set everything aside to come and listen to the Dhamma — don't think of it as merely sitting around for fun, because the Triple Gem and Nibbana descend every single day, at this very time.
Living Within the Wholesome System Brings Balance and Peace
Old merit is limited, like a phone battery — use it and it runs down, and once it's spent, problems appear. So we need to keep asking what truly matters most and benefits us the most. When we're genuinely grounded in the wholesome system, we know instantly whether the stream of merit is flowing right now. The mind grows calm, content with what we have and are, at ease, unclouded, filled with loving-kindness as a baseline, steadily inclined toward doing what is right and good, backed by wisdom and patience.
When You Can't Recall Merit, It's Defilement Blocking the Way
Sometimes we simply can't recall any merit — that's because mental defilements are obscuring the elements, darkening the mind so nothing comes to mind. But when the wholesome side steps in to help, even memories buried deep in the distant past can surface in full detail. Everything runs through one of the three systems; when we can't recall merit, recognize immediately that the unwholesome or indeterminate side has taken over as "master of the house" and won't let the memory surface. Don't worry — just keep gently reaching for whatever small good deeds you can recall, over and over, without stopping. It will gradually improve, and the memory will eventually return on its own. To simply give up trying is to hand control over to the other side.
