ดวงรู้ต่างจากความคิดอย่างไร และเหตุใดคนส่วนใหญ่จึงไม่ตระหนักถึงเป้าหมายชีวิต?How Does the Sphere of Knowing Differ from Thinking — and Why Don't Most People Notice Life's True Goal?
Pra Ajarn explains the difference between the 'sphere of knowing,' which connects to the inner wise one on the wholesome side, and ordinary thinking, which only draws on limited memory. He also answers why most people never notice life's true goal, and why lucky numbers and names have no real power over one's life.
Someone asked: sometimes while working, an answer or arises on its own without any conscious thinking — how can one tell this is the 'sphere of knowing' at work, and how is it different from ordinary thought?
How Knowing Differs from Thinking
Pra Ajarn explained that thinking means pulling data from the well of memory and arranging it — and that data is limited, so it can only solve problems in a small way. Thinking 'outside the box' is impossible if you're still relying on old stored information. Knowing, by contrast, needs no thinking at all — just gentle awareness; the question comes, the answer comes. When we use thinking to search for data, the mind gets used up in that effort, and the inner wise one has no room to slip good information in. But when we simply maintain awareness to connect with the inner wise one, the sphere of knowing arises, and the sphere of not-knowing — — falls away. This sphere of knowing connects to an inner knower who holds far more information than thought could ever reach, which is why the answers that come are often beyond what we ourselves could have thought up.
That said, knowing itself can come from side, side, or the neutral side. This is why we need to train ourselves to connect with the wholesome system so the sphere of knowing arises reliably.
A Real Experience That Confirms the Difference
The questioner shared that one day, while speaking with a client with no preparation at all, answers simply arose on the spot, appropriate to the converon — even on a subject she had no prior of. It didn't feel like something wrung out of the brain, but something that welled up from within. Pra Ajarn confirmed this as the result of maintaining awareness connected to the inner wise one, who feeds in information beyond what conscious thought could reach.
Why Don't Most People Notice Life's True Goal
Another question: even after being reminded for years that life's true goal is to realize nibbana, why do most people still fail to grasp it? Pra Ajarn explained that it depends on which nature governs a person's mind. Those under the neutral (avyākata) nature simply have no interest — caught up in work, eating, and leisure. Those under the unwholesome nature reject the idea outright and won't even hear of it. Only those anchored in the wholesome system get the chance to truly understand life's goal. Large organizations or educated people tend to set clear goals because a supporting system exists for them; where the goal is never reinforced, no supporting system forms. When we set a clear goal and keep reaffirming it, the wholesome side automatically claims more and more of our time.
Do Numbers or Names Really Change Your Life?
Someone asked whether numbers — like a phone number or license plate — really affect one's life. Pra Ajarn answered that if this were true, the Buddha would surely have added it as an eleventh perfection. When people change their name or phone number and feel their life improve, it's actually because the cycle of unwholesome result that was causing their suffering was simply running out, and the wholesome side was stepping in to take over. But the unwholesome side then plants the misunderstanding that it was the number or the name — an unconscious wrong view. In truth it is the fruit of merit arriving at the right time. If numbers truly had this power, everyone who changed them would get the same result — not just a lucky few.
