เหมือนเปิดแอร์แล้วรับรู้ความเย็น: บทบาทของเราคือผู้รับรู้ผล ไม่ใช่ผู้สร้างLike Turning on an Air Conditioner and Feeling the Coolness: We Are the Witness, Not the Maker
Phra Ajarn Suraphong compares our role in meditation to switching on an air conditioner and simply feeling the coolness it produces — we are not the one manufacturing the refined states clear comprehension is working out in detail, only the witness receiving them, before leading into loving-kindness and dedication of merit.
Mindfulness and Clear Comprehension Working Together Automatically
Phra Ajarn Suraphong begins by having listeners note the breath, note the pulse, then expand awareness to know the whole body at once. When we direct attention to the pulse, he explains, leads us to that senon, and then knows the sensation that arises. He cites the teaching of Luang Phor jayo that clear comprehension is the continuation of mindfulness — the two work together automatically.
Gently Closing the Eyes, Setting an Inner Image
Once the mind rests well with the body, he has us gently close our eyelids, just enough for the lashes to touch, letting a little light through, so the feeling hovers between inner and outer. Then we shift the sense of self inward, about a hand's width, forming a mental mark — a bright sphere or a crystal Buddha image, whichever we prefer. He stresses that whether it appears vividly or not is unimportant; the purpose is only to give the mind something to anchor to.
Focusing on Each Syllable, Without Rushing
He teaches reciting "" syllable by syllable, with a relaxed, open, light mind — never rushed, never forced, because rushing makes it coarse rather than refined. He teaches drawing perception, memory, thought, and knowing together to a single stopping point; wherever attention rests, everything gathers there. Do it playfully, without pressure; if it feels tense or strained, switch to something simpler, because the more purely wholesome the knowing is, the more comfortable it feels.
The Heart of the Talk: Like Turning On an Air Conditioner and Feeling the Coolness
This is the most vivid image in the entire talk. Describing our role while clear comprehension works out the fine details of a mental state, the teacher explains that we are not the one doing the work — we are only the one receiving the result that clear comprehension's detailed work produces. Mindfulness leads us to the meditation object we have determined; clear comprehension then takes over, coming to know that object's state fully. We simply receive the result that gradually appears from clear comprehension's detailed work.
He gives the analogy directly: **when we turn on an air conditioner, it produces cool air — that is simply the air conditioner's own quality — and we feel it, the way we notice a scent spreading through a room; we are receiving the result of it.** The Dhamma works the same way. Once it is established, it manifests its own result on its own; we are merely the one who perceives the result that appears — not the one manufacturing that coolness ourselves. We simply flip the switch (by determining to know) and then wait to receive the result, produced according to that tool's own nature.
He stresses that our role is to receive the result appearing from clear comprehension's ongoing work — never to interfere with it, never to expect or anticipate an outcome, but simply to let clear comprehension work out its details, receiving whatever gradually appears. Clear comprehension is precisely the faculty that works out ever-finer detail in fully knowing subtler and subtler states.
Witnessing an Exquisite Work in Progress
He compares this to watching a master craftsman produce something wondrous. We receive it without interference — still, focused, simply perceiving the one producing this delicate work, which is clear comprehension, gradually leading us into ever more subtle, gentle, and profound refinement. Everything happens automatically; we need only attend to the fineness of the work as it gradually, delicately appears.
Loving-Kindness Works the Same Way: We Are the Receiver of the Result
He extends this same principle to the radiating of . Once we set a pure, wholesome wish for others' well-being, loving-kindness manifests its own quality on its own — brightness and genuine goodwill. We determine how far the mind expands; loving-kindness shines and manifests goodwill exactly that far. We simply receive the result of the Dhamma that mindfulness has established.
Dedicating Merit and Radiating Loving-Kindness
He dedicates the merit arising from entering this refined state to our ancestors — recalling parents, siblings, elder relatives, and benefactor teachers. He then sets the wish for well-being for the world and all beings, radiating loving-kindness to cover the home, expanding across the neighborhood, district, province, country, and the entire world and universe, wishing all beings freedom from suffering and universal .
Setting the Aspiration
The talk closes with the customary aspiration, invoking the blessings of the Triple Gem, Nibbāna, and his own teaching lineage, asking that this merit combine with all merit accumulated with good intention — brightening and purifying everyone's mind, freeing them from misfortune and obstacles, granting into the Dhamma, good health, and unwavering resolve to build perfections all the way to the final goal of the Dhamma.
