Phra Ajarn explains that the urge to gamble or seek quick wealth comes from unwholesomeness — greed — operating behind the scenes. Over time a person becomes attached not to the money but to the very state of mind of gambling, a pattern that repeats into future lives. Breaking free requires virtue, concentration, and wisdom, through both calm and insight meditation, to purify the underlying karmic residue.
Someone asked: what craving or cause makes people want to take chances and get rich quick, and how should this be fixed?
The Root of Wanting to Get Rich Quick
It comes from what is unwholesome () — specifically . This unwholesome force is already bent on destruction. Instead of earning an honest, upright livelihood, it leads a person toward gambling. The house has already calculated everything so that it always profits — no operator ever loses. If the loss is large, they run; if it's small, they simply pay out. So there is no way to beat the house. And this pattern repeats itself life after life, because the force controlling things from behind the scenes is mind — it operates from within, compelling a person to keep playing, using s () to control their state of mind.
At first, a person wants the money. But the longer they play, the more they become attached — not really to the money, but to the state of mind itself, the mood of greed. It is this pleasure taken in that state of mind that drives them to repeat the same pattern, life after life.
Can It Be Stopped, and How to Fix It
A person can stop only when past catches up with them. When that happens, wholesomeness becomes dominant and can help them quit. But even if someone stops in this life, the causes they have already accumulated remain. They still take pleasure in it and do not see its danger and harm. So in a future life, once the unwholesome force becomes dominant again, it will compel them right back into the same pattern.
To truly fix this, one must see the danger and harm — and seeing that requires wisdom. But to develop wisdom, one first has to purify the defilement that is the karmic result (vipaka) of this unwholesomeness. That purification comes through meditation practice: () to clear the defilement, and () to see the danger and harm clearly. Both are needed together — the of the heart () and the (pañña), both the release itself and the -and-vision of that release — only then can it truly be resolved. Otherwise it cannot be fixed. It depends on both concentration and wisdom.
A Real-Life Example: The More You Play, the More You're Stuck
Someone gave an example of a person they knew — someone with steady work all year round and a fairly good income — who nonetheless spent around 5,000 baht at a time on lottery tickets, adding up to tens of thousands a month. This person had once been cheated and said they would stop buying, but whenever a draw drew near, they would have a dream — and after the dream, they would go and buy again anyway. Some draws won, some did not. In the end, there was nothing left of the money.
Phra Ajarn responded that some people bring in income only to pour it into gambling — playing the lottery again and again until they fall into debt. This is the frightening vicious cycle of the unwholesome side of life. Whether it is greed, aversion, or lust, each can ruin a person in its own way — if it is not one thing, it is another. Some people are quick to anger, insisting on having their own way, flaring up over the smallest things until their life falls apart. Some are ruined by gambling out of greed. Others are ruined by infatuation and delusion, caught up in that state of mind. Human life just circles around these same few things.
In short: it comes from craving, with the unwholesome mind operating behind the scenes, using greed to create attachment to a state of mind. Sometimes a person no longer even wants the money — at first they do, but the longer they play, the more they become attached to the feeling itself, until playing becomes the only thing they want. The fix requires , concentration, and wisdom, through and meditation, and both the liberation of the heart and the liberation of wisdom — only then can this karmic result truly be resolved. Otherwise, it cannot be fixed.
Buying for Someone Else Still Feeds the Same Attachment
Someone shared a story they had once heard, about a person who bought lottery tickets that had already won and gave them to their mother, so that she would feel the joy of checking a ticket and finding it a winner.
Phra Ajarn responded that, in the end, this is still an attachment to a state of mind. In future lives, the same pattern will repeat, because of that attachment — taking pleasure and delight in that state of mind. This is exactly what makes it so dangerous.
