A clouded mind creates an opening that draws in old bad karma to ripen, so meditating daily and making merit often keeps a steady stream of merit flowing to the body's center, keeping the mind clear and drawing in good karma instead.

The question was asked: is there a way to keep karma from the past from finding an opening to bear fruit?\n\nOne method is to watch your own mind. If you observe closely, you'll notice that when the mind turns cloudy, or you're stressed and anxious, and you let yourself stay gloomy and murky for a while, it isn't long before bad things start piling up, making you even more troubled. This happens because a clouded mind creates a kind of channel that easily draws in old karma from the past, giving it an opening to bear fruit. So a wise person must always be looking for ways to keep the mind nourished with at all times, so that past mistakes never get that opening.\n\nWhen the mind is clear instead, full of the joy and fullness that comes from merit, it develops a channel that draws in old merit from the past — including merit that has grown weak — pulling many scattered pieces of it together to bear fruit at once. It's like a large magnet sending out a field that pulls together pieces of iron scattered around it. When merit gathers and bears fruit like this, life becomes smooth, prosperous, and flourishing — escaping death, recovering from illness, and growing happier than before.

Why a Clouded Mind Attracts Old Karma

A clouded mind arises from moral im — a kind of energy belonging to the side of unwholesomeness. As long as we haven't reached arahantship, this impurity remains with us. When unwholesome states settle into the mind and we go along with them, we become shaped by , hatred, delusion, and lust. Unwholesome thoughts and feelings then keep pulling in more unwholesome karma. Once the mind is clouded, whatever new wrongdoing we commit draws in the old wrongdoing we've accumulated in the past — a great deal of which is stored up, some already placed on our life's timeline, but much more still held back by wholesome forces. It's this new wrongdoing that reaches back and pulls in the old. That's why, once the mind clouds over, troubles seem to pile on one after another.

This impurity also creates problems and obstacles — above all by obscuring our ability to see the true roots of things, leaving us confused and unable to solve our problems.

The Two Conditions Under Which Merit Flows In

Merit flows in under only two conditions. The first is when we act with goodness — that is, when we practice the . Merit flows in so that we can keep practicing consistently and see real results. The second is resisting the harm that comes from unwholesome, sinful forces — this is what we call moral precepts (), which exist to preserve wholesome normalcy. Wholesomeness must draw in merit to give us the strength to resist wrongdoing and protect that wholesome state. Doing good and practicing the Dhamma, together with resisting wrongdoing by keeping — these two things alone are the essence of the Buddha's teaching.

When we live within this wholesome system, a steady stream of merit keeps flowing in. New merit that flows in draws along with it old merit that hasn't yet been placed on our life's timeline — and there is a great deal of that stored up as well.

Two Natures That Take Turns as Host of the Mind

Within us, two utterly different natures take turns being the “host” of our mind. Whichever one takes possession brings its own aggregate — its body, feeling, mind, and s — layering itself over ours, and controls and directs us through its own thoughts and feelings. If we go along with it, we become bound and shaped by that nature, and our behavior, speech, and thinking follow what it wants.

When side is in control, new merit draws in old merit to power the wholesome system, refining and purifying the elements within us and leading toward . When side is in control, it draws in sin that keeps pulling us further down. It's like that same magnet: when merit gathers and bears fruit, life runs smoothly and prospers; but when wrongdoing takes the seat instead, it draws in impurity — both old and new — that harms and damages our life.

The Practice: Meditate and Make Merit to Keep the Mind Clear

The mind becomes clear only when merit flows in and gradually washes away the impurity that clouds it. This is achieved by sitting in meditation every day and making merit often, so that a stream of merit keeps flowing in and connecting to at all times. Do this, and karma from the past won't find its opening to bear fruit. On the contrary, this bright, clear stream nourishing the mind carries the power to draw good things into your life, bringing ever-greater happiness and prosperity.

Making merit through the orious action channels energy inward, but ordinarily we tend to focus on the quantity of that energy rather than its quality. This differs from cultivating perfections (bāramī), which emphasize quality. Take giving, for example: ordinary giving is simply handing something over, but giving as a perfection focuses on letting go of , clearing away the impurity tied to it, and becoming someone who brings good fortune to others — leaving the mind brighter because of the quality of the merit that flows through to cleanse it. The same is true of precepts: ordinary merit from keeping precepts is just taking the vow and moving on, but precepts as a perfection carry the intention to purify the precepts fully, to offer safety to others, and to cleanse the mind thoroughly — strengthening our and raising its quality.

The center of is where resides — the place where merit is stored. The spheres of merit and of sin share that same center; whichever sphere is larger overshadows the other, and it is the larger sphere that sends out its influence to draw in the elements that will bear fruit.

This is the teaching's core message: keep merit with you, always.
