Phra Ajarn explains that conversation reveals whether someone's inner experience is leading them the right way, and that those who don't understand it need a knowledgeable guide to explain cause and effect — so they can see the benefits and dangers and avoid becoming a tool of unwholesomeness.
A lay follower asked Phra Ajarn: if she meets someone who can see inside their own body, should she recommend they join the group or come meet Phra Ajarn? And how would she know if this person is on the same path as her group?
Phra Ajarn answered that we come to know this through converon — by hearing how what the person has reached will lead them forward, or whether they're able to continue on their own. Most people who don't understand their experience need to find someone able, who can explain the causes and effects at play, helping them understand what they're going through: what benefit and value it holds, and what suffering, danger, or obstacles come with it.
Once a person understands the benefit they stand to gain, they'll have the heart to keep going. And once they recognize what could be an obstacle, they'll be careful not to act on causes rooted in unwholesomeness, or in indeterminate states that are neither wholesome nor unwholesome. An indeterminate state simply slows a person down; unwholesomeness sends them down the wrong path entirely — both can become tools that unwholesomeness uses against them.
Phra Ajarn then compared two cases. In one, a person sits in meditation and experiences brightness. In the other, a person chants before sleep, and while asleep sees themselves as more beautiful, better, yet younger — and something then tells them what to do, and their life improves. Phra Ajarn confirmed this was correct: this is body, feeling, mind, and mental quality arising from side. When it appears, it naturally guides a person to do what is right and good, and it improves their life.
Phra Ajarn added that anyone can be invited to come learn more. If a person wishes to understand more deeply, everyone is welcome to join.
Even once a person knows and understands, without new information it becomes hard to keep moving forward. It's like driving at night — you need your headlights shining ahead, ten meters, twenty meters at a time, and that's how you keep going. Don't ever let that light stop shining. That's how we're able to keep moving forward. Light in life matters greatly: knowledge and understanding give rise to vision, and vision gives rise to inspiration — the kind that can transform a life into a better one. This is a matter of the greatest importance.
