The more often we do it, the more other merit gets drawn in to help — the key is keeping our life anchored in the wholesome system, both inwardly and in our surroundings, and staying clear of the unwholesome and the neutral.
Someone asked: before starting something important, what's the right way to set an intention so it actually works?
Old merit and new merit
When we set an intention, that blueprint gets locked in like a program. The wholesome system — overseen by the Triple Gem, with Nibbana behind it — takes that intention and builds it into merit, into a completed design. How much it delivers depends on how strong our aspiration is.
In truth, we're already being looked after by old merit — call it the "Universal Monarch" managing things behind the scenes — whether in travel, business, or anything else, keeping problems and obstacles at bay. But the moment we set an intention, fresh merit arises — and it also draws in other merit we created long ago that hasn't yet come due on our life's timeline. So without setting an intention, we only draw on old merit. Set it often, sincerely, and old and new merit compound together more and more.
The wholesome, unwholesome, and neutral systems
Our life runs as a system problem, not something we control alone — it depends on our surroundings and on countless factors working behind the scenes. So it comes down to which system, and which forces, sit behind the machinery around us.
Our intention should be to stay continuously anchored in system — inwardly, in our own mind, and outwardly, in our environment. The wholesome system only ever gives what's right and good: , success, fulfillment. The unwholesome system can hand out the same things — wealth, status, praise, pleasure — but behind it is an intent to eventually destroy us. The neutral system won't harm us, but it won't help either; it just quietly drains our time and resources for nothing.
Once we've set that intention to live within the wholesome system, steer clear of , and stop paying attention to the neutral, the wholesome side itself will start pointing things out — helping us read our surroundings and the people around us, showing which system each belongs to, however tangled they may look.
A practical example: precepts, giving, meditation
One person in the converon shared their own habit: before anything big or worrying, they keep the eight precepts for three days beforehand, then do a big act of giving — whatever kind brings them the most joy — to soften the heart, followed by extra meditation. Their approach rests on three things: precepts, giving, and meditation, done more intensively than usual, while keeping the mind fixed on their teachers and asking for their support throughout.
The teacher confirmed this really is what living in the wholesome system looks like — giving, precepts, and meditation, alongside closeness to wise and capable guides. He added that we already carry the tools within us: , concentration, and wisdom, which lead onward to liberation and the knowing of liberation — we just need to put them to use.
