Merit is a calm, pure kind of happiness, different from the excitement-driven pleasure of unwholesome states. By deliberately settling the mind on ease and happiness, we draw merit into ourselves.
Someone asked: merit is really just another name for — so if we set our minds on being happy, aren't we adding merit to ourselves? The teacher confirmed this, then explained further.
Wholesome Happiness Differs From Unwholesome Happiness
Wherever the mind attaches, it flows there. But happiness isn't only kind — there's an unwholesome kind of happiness too. Unwholesome happiness is the kind that leaves the mind scattered and excited — watching a film, listening to music — all of it built on thrill and excitement, with no simplicity or stillness to it.
Wholesome happiness, by contrast, is calm — peaceful, secluded, dispassionate, liberating, pure — leading toward nibbana, growing subtler and more profound step by step, a gradual letting go.
Why Merit Is Called "Happiness"
This wholesome happiness is fully contained within the sphere of merit, paired together with . So the moment we settle the mind and recognize that sphere — the moment arises — we perceive happiness and purity together with it. Mindfulness (knowing), happiness, and purity are thus the three qualities at the starting point of the wholesome path. The destination is the Buddha's three great qualities: the quality of supreme wisdom, the quality of perfect purity, and the quality of great compassion. Start and destination belong to the same lineage — the state of knowing leads to the quality of wisdom; purity leads to the quality of purity; and happiness leads to the quality of great compassion, because we must have happiness ourselves before we're able to care for and support others.
This is why merit carries the name "happiness" — because happiness exists within the sphere of merit itself, as a current filling it to overflowing.
Settling the Mind on Happiness Draws Merit In
When we deliberately settle the mind on happiness and ease, merit flows in. We can add merit to ourselves simply by settling the mind on comfort and happiness. Demerit works the opposite way, bringing suffering instead.
What to Do When Meditation Brings No Happiness at All
Someone wondered: what if sitting in meditation brings no happiness whatsoever — how can the mind even be settled then, and can merit still come? The teacher explained that during meditation, an unpurified mind is still full of demerit. Settling the mind to know it directly means facing that demerit head-on, so real is required. Patience and inner discipline help carry us through, drawing merit in to purify and lighten the impurity. As the impurity lightens, the inner turmoil lightens with it, and things gradually improve — it starts to feel like the right path, and the mind grows steadily more at ease. All of this is simply how the system works, and it's why we need to understand it, so we can live in a way that's aligned with it.
