The teacher explains that dropping into the center repeatedly during meditation happens as inner impurities are cleared away layer by layer, until the mind becomes refined enough to settle continuously.
A lay follower asked: sometimes during meditation the mind "drops to the center" (tok sun) anywhere from zero to six times in a single sitting. According to kaya teaching, is this the right path, and why does it happen this way?
The teacher said this is very good, and he rejoiced in hearing of such an experience. Dropping to the center repeatedly happens because there is a pull toward the center: the veil of subtle obscuration has already grown very thin, so the base can be drawn inward toward the center. The reason it takes several drops is that impurities still remain and need to be cleared away one layer at a time. The first drop tends to feel heavy and abrupt; each time after that the impurities grow lighter, and the experience gradually becomes smoother.
The reason the mind has not yet settled continuously into the inner middle way is that its refinement is not yet sufficient to enter fully into the inner dimension along the path within . He advised continuing to practice steadily, clearing away impurities little by little, and for now adding extra sitting sessions — afternoon, evening, and night. Whatever method is already working, he said, keep doing it.
