Someone asked: as a (kalyāṇamitta), how should we go about offering others good opportunities?
Help Them Understand That Karma Bears Fruit at Every Moment
The first thing is to help them understand that in every moment of our lives, the law of karma is bearing fruit continuously. If it is the fruit of , then when we create wholesome causes, it yields , prosperity, rightness, and the fulfillment of our good wishes — because once we've created the cause, the merit-element flows in.
The Blueprint of Success Is Sealed Within the Sphere of Merit
When we create a cause through to completion, we receive our reward: the . All of it is sealed within the completed sphere of merit, which is composed of the pure merit-element, happiness, and refined treasures, together with that blueprint — all sealed within the completed sphere, yielding results according to the merit of that blueprint.
Much or Little, Just Do It
So whether much or little, just do it — whether merit from giving, keeping precepts, meditating, humility, helping in others' tasks, rejoicing in merit, sharing merit, listening to , discussing Dhamma, or setting one's view straight in line with the truth; or the ten perfections: generosity, morality, renunciation, wisdom, effort, , truthfulness, resolution, , and equanimity. All of these must be done — and doing them bears fruit.
Good Opportunities Don't Come Often, So Let Others Take Part
Because opportunities don't come often, when one appears, act on it. Offering others good opportunities simply means sharing news of whatever merit there is to be made — whether they do little or much doesn't matter, so long as we have a part in that merit, since some may not otherwise have the chance. Even five or ten baht counts just the same. As for those who won't take part at all, that isn't good. Little or much, just go ahead and do it.
