Pra Ajarn explains that a pure Dhamma arises only when we abide with the wholesome, which draws in merit as a pure element, together with refined treasures that attract coarse treasures free of misfortune. This is opposite to an impure element, which draws in demerit and misfortune instead — with the Triple Gem within us overseeing this entire wholesome system.
Someone asked (implicitly): how does a pure draw in pure elements?
A Pure Dhamma Arises Only When We Abide With the Wholesome
A pure Dhamma can arise only when we abide with . The wholesome then draws merit in — the pure energy of merit flows through, appearing as a bright, clear sphere, filled inside with and sacred , possessing power and force able to dispel the stains and defilements of demerit. Nothing else at all can dispel the stains and defilements of demerit — only the pure merit-element can.
Merit Is a Pure Element That Draws In Pure Treasures
Merit is a pure element. When the Dhamma is pure, it draws in the pure element — merit. Within the sphere of merit are also all manner of treasures: physical treasure, material treasure, virtuous qualities, retinue, wealth, status, praise, happiness, and the path, fruit, and nibbāna. These refined treasures draw in coarse treasures — the ordinary treasures of the world — of good quality, free of misfortune, to come and stay with us, bringing us happiness. If the element is pure, no stain and no misfortune comes attached, and we can enjoy that wealth happily.
If the Element Is Impure, It Draws In Misfortune Instead
Conversely, if the element is impure, lies behind it, drawing in demerit and misfortune instead. When these come, they bring with them stains and defilements that create problems and obstacles, hardship, and all manner of suffering, harm, and danger.
A Pure Dhamma Depends on the System of the Wholesome, Overseen by the Triple Gem
For this reason, we must cultivate and establish a pure Dhamma within us. A pure Dhamma can only arise by relying on the system of the wholesome. The wholesome grants the utmost purity, and the ultimate wholesome state is nibbāna — the Triple Gem present within every one of us. The Triple Gem oversees the system of the wholesome, establishing the pure Dhamma — that is, the wholesome Dhamma. And this wholesome Dhamma is what draws in the pure element — the merit-element. The merit-element, carrying its refined treasures, then draws in coarse treasures free of misfortune for us to enjoy with happiness and peace of mind, with no demerit attached.
