Someone asked: there was news of a monk on alms round who was struck by a vehicle and died, as though demerit had overpowered merit. If ordination and the robe are believed to protect every monk, how could this happen?
Ordination protects only when the person genuinely stands within system — the system the Triple Gem oversees, with Nibbāna standing behind it. Whether one is ordained or not, if one stands within that wholesome system, it will help: merit flows through, turning something heavy into something light, and light into nothing at all. But if someone is ordained and yet doesn't stand within wholesomeness, the wholesome force simply cannot help — not because it's unwilling, but because that person has placed themselves under a different system entirely, one that deals with them according to its own dimension.
Whatever system we stand within is the system that shapes our life. Stand within , and the unwholesome takes charge. Stand within the neutral force, and it gives its own kind of result. But stand within the wholesome system, and it will help. So this has nothing to do with whether one is ordained — each of the three natural forces has real power over the human body the moment it takes hold.
