Someone asked: I still don't quite understand the difference between "knowing" and "thinking."
The mind has two functions: knowing and thinking. "Knowing" means information arrives and is simply received as it is, with nothing added — the mind doesn't stir. For instance, when we recite the meditation word "sammā-arahaṃ," we simply know the recitation; whatever or arises, we simply know it.
"Thinking," by contrast, is elaboration — it draws on information and rearranges it to produce whatever answer we're after. Working out "1 plus x equals 2," for example, requires thinking to arrive at a result. Anything elaborated or constructed is the product of thought.
A person who knows without thinking can still sense the differences between things and carry out activities purely through knowing — but they won't be able to explain it to someone else, because explanation itself requires the elaboration of thought. As for s, they are the feelings that arise together with the mind. The mind itself contains both knowing and thinking.
