Every time we recall that image, it reconnects us to that same great merit.
A student recounted that one day she went to pay homage to a revered late teacher's statue, gilding gold leaf onto his eyes while making a wish. The following day, sitting in meditation, she felt open and empty, and suddenly saw an image of a figure appearing on her left side — the same side where she had gilded the gold. Uncertain whether this was an inner vision or the teacher wishing to guide her, she asked whether there was something he wanted to tell or advise her.
Recall that image — that beautiful memory. Because when he shows us compassion, or when our own refinement reaches that particular point, at the moment we pay homage to him, we appear bright within him, and he appears bright within us; he then works to refine us further, bringing our refinement to the point where we can see him. That very image, seen at that moment, is what produced the joy — keep it stored in memory.
Every time we recall this refined memory-image, it reconnects us to that same great merit — so recall it often, again and again, at every possible moment. Whether pursuing an honest livelihood or doing anything at all, bring the mind back to that image. When facing a problem, recall that image too. That image becomes a merit-generating tool for us, drawing in the pure merit of that state to arise again within us. Use this tool as something that helps improve our life. Having acted on good causes and reached that state, the teacher has given us this gift — a tool for drawing in the merit born of our own goodness. Use it often, like a treasured gift he has bestowed, because every time we recall it, we can draw in pure, empowered merit that flows in, refines us, and drives the process of purification and liberation, bringing us success and fulfillment of our wishes.
Such opportunities — where we act on wholesome causes and reach this level of refinement — are rare. That refinement, once reached, is stored in memory, and we can put that memory to good use as a wondrous tool for resolving problems and obstacles, or for making life flourish. Every time we recall it, it is refined, exquisite merit — a high-quality merit-generating tool, arriving together with refined treasure and a good . It can be considered a kind of sacred merit — a tool that can always draw in more sacred merit.
