A student asked why the Noble Eightfold Path is able to lead to the attainment of Nirvana.

The Noble Eightfold Path Is a Complete Training System — Not Merely Teaching Good Behavior

The teacher explained that the Noble Eightfold Path leads to the attainment of the path and fruit of Nirvana because it is a method for training thought, speech, action, and mind together, extinguishing the direct causes of suffering — greed, aversion, and delusion, the root of the endless cycle of birth and death. Suffering arises from craving and ; to be free of suffering, these root causes must be extinguished. The Eightfold Path is the direct instrument for destroying these causes, divided into three groups working together: wisdom (right view, right thought), (right speech, right action, right livelihood), and concentration (right effort, , ). The Path leads to Nirvana because it restructures the mind itself toward wholesomeness — it does not merely teach us to be good people. When wisdom pierces fully through to the truth of life, ignorance ceases; this causes craving to cease; and the ceson of craving causes suffering to cease. This is the one path the Buddha himself declared to be the way out of the cycle of existence.

The spheres of virtue, concentration, and wisdom — along with the spheres of right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right , and right concentration — are all instruments already present at the center of our own being. We simply need to learn how to use them.

Right View Means Understanding the Law of Karma and the Law of the Three Characteristics

The teacher elaborated further on right view: it means correctly understanding that our life exists amid the law of karma and (impermanence, suffering, non-self), both of which produce suffering as their result. The cause of suffering is craving. While the law of the three characteristics and the law of karma continuously press upon us — the law of karma delivering results, whether good or bad, which we must simply endure — the law of the three characteristics also presses us to create new causes, relying on the chain of feeling, craving, and clinging that follows.

Right thought means thinking correctly — free of greed and free of ill will — since both of these lead to harming others. Virtue consists of the prohibitions: right speech (refraining from divisive speech, idle chatter, harsh speech, and lying), right action (refraining from killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct), and right livelihood (refraining from any occupation that harms oneself or others). Right effort means striving correctly, knowing what deserves effort and what does not. Right mindfulness means correctly recollecting — clearly discerning body, feeling, mind, and mental objects, in order to eliminate covetousness and grief regarding the world. And once right mindfulness is established, right concentration naturally follows.

These three groups — virtue, concentration, and wisdom — thus genuinely restructure the mind toward wholesomeness: training behavior through virtue, training the mind through concentration, and training correct understanding through wisdom. When wisdom fully pierces through to the truth of life, ignorance ceases, craving ceases along with it, and suffering finally comes to an end. This is the one path that leads to liberation from the cycle of existence.
