สมาธิช่วยรักษาโรคได้จริงหรือ และควรทำใจอย่างไรเมื่อคนในครอบครัวป่วยหนัก?Can Meditation Really Help Heal Illness — and How Should We Cope When a Loved One Is Gravely Ill?
He explains that life is governed by the unchangeable law of kamma alongside the law of the three characteristics, which we can choose to align with — abiding in the wholesome can reduce what must be repaid in full down to only a portion — and shares real accounts of meditation and recollecting the Triple Gem genuinely easing serious illness.
A student shared that his elderly mother had recently faced an unexpected health crisis, requiring major surgery, and further tests revealed cancer as well — despite her having always taken good care of her health. It caught the family completely off guard, both emotionally and in terms of disagreement over the best course of treatment. He asked how he should come to terms with a situation like this.
Life is governed by the unchangeable law of kamma, and by the law of the three characteristics, which we can choose
He explained that our life is governed by two laws: , which cannot be changed at all, and . Every circumstance we find ourselves in comes entirely from the law of kamma — our family, our career, even siblings born of the same parents attending the same school can still end up with very different outcomes in life. Everything begins from the very first moment of conception, already recorded into our structure — illnesses, appearance, what conditions will arise at what age, how severe or mild, chronic or not — all of it clearly set, simply unfolding in due course. No amount of worry changes that.
Since the law of kamma cannot be avoided, what remains is the law of the three characteristics, which may help, may worsen things, or may do neither — depending on which system we abide in. When the sphere of demerit is due to give its result, it grows larger than the sphere of merit and wraps around it, preventing merit from showing its qualities. The sphere of demerit releases a stream that draws in misfortune, pushing wealth and assets away, damaging both finances and health, whether from within the body or through external accidents. Whether death actually occurs depends on whether the sphere of death appears — if it doesn't, even a severe incident won't end in death; if it does, even something as ordinary as sleep can. Everything is already set; grieving over it doesn't help — it only adds more gloom to the mind.
Abiding in the wholesome can reduce a debt owed in full down to just a portion
What can help is abiding within the right system — nature. Abiding in only intensifies things further — more suffering, more prolonged. The neutral neither helps nor worsens. Only the wholesome can truly help and heal. If we abide in the unwholesome, we must repay the debt in full — 100 percent. But if we abide within the wholesome system, it helps cover all but the portion the unwholesome absolutely refuses to yield — perhaps only around 20 percent remains to be endured. For the other 80 percent, the wholesome side gathers together the small merits accumulated in the past — offering food or medicine to monks and novices, for instance — to help ease things from heavy to light, and light to gone. But without abiding in the wholesome nature, especially if abiding in the unwholesome, not only must the full debt be repaid, it drags on and intensifies further, because gloom, complaint, and inner turmoil all undermine the wholesome's ability to help. Even a doctor's diagnosis depends on the wholesome working behind the scenes — without that support, finding a good doctor with the right treatment becomes difficult.
Real accounts: meditation and recollecting the Triple Gem genuinely ease illness
He shared three real accounts. First, a cancer patient in hospital kept an image of a revered elder beside the bed, and whenever the pain flared, looked to the image and asked for help — the elder appeared beside the bed and said he was already helping. Second, an infant only months old developed a severe rash and cried around the clock, exhausting the family. Since the child was too young to be brought to make merit directly, he advised the family to commission a Buddha image with the child's name inscribed at its base. Not long after, the child's condition was properly treated and resolved. Third, an elderly man who had suffered from paralysis for years without recovery was advised to visualize the Buddha image within his belly and recite "Sammā-Arahaṁ" whenever he wished to recover. Within a few months, he went from being entirely bedridden to walking while holding onto furniture for support.
He added that research institutes in America, Canada, and Europe have studied and even established centers for treating cancer through meditation, examining alpha and beta brainwaves — but they don't recognize that what's truly happening is the energy of merit being drawn in to drive the wholesome system, purifying the im that causes suffering and danger. Focusing directly on a point of pain draws merit to help that specific spot, but focusing on — , the center of the sphere of merit connecting every body: the human body, the divine body, the Brahma body, the formless Brahma body, and — brings more thorough healing. Or, if the pain is intense, focusing directly on that spot works too, since the mind naturally gravitates there anyway. Letting the sphere of knowing, the sphere of , arise draws pure energy in to purify the impurity, easing things from heavy to light. Only the can truly help heal — even a doctor's ability to cure depends on old merit, or new merit drawing in the old, to succeed.
For the student's situation specifically, he advised continuing with whatever conventional medical treatment the family had agreed upon, alongside playing Dhamma recordings or chanting for the mother to listen to, letting her follow along as much as she's able without adding pressure or stress — especially practicing stillness of mind, which draws merit in to purify and drive the wholesome system to help.
