วิธีลบความทรงจำที่ไม่ดีออกจากใจ เมื่อนั่งสมาธิแล้วมันผุดขึ้นมาซ้ำ ๆHow to Clear Painful Memories From the Heart When They Keep Resurfacing During Meditation
The teacher explains that painful memories resurface because impurity is still accumulated within — continuous practice is needed so the rate of purification outpaces the rate of accumulation — and also explains how old grudges from injustice can stay lodged in the heart for years through bonds of enmity.
A lay follower asked: some people meditate well, but then a painful childhood memory surfaces, disrupting their practice. This keeps happening repeatedly. How can such a memory be cleared from the heart?
Why Old Memories Keep Resurfacing
The teacher explained that this is information side has kept on hand, using it to unsettle and cloud the mind — a tool it knows works effectively on us. This happens because im is still accumulated within. The unwholesome draws on whatever information proves effective to keep reinforcing the pattern. One remedy is to wish, through sincere aspiration, for the bad memory to fade away or lose its power. But the deeper issue is inconsistent practice — the unwholesome needs the accumulated energy of impurity to reach a certain threshold before it can have real effect. With continuous practice, impurity steadily thins, so that even when the unwholesome draws on it, the effect is minor and cannot drag the mind down significantly. It all comes down to how much impurity has accumulated — the remedy is simply to practice meditation consistently, every day.
The Rate of Purification Must Outpace the Rate of Accumulation
Asked how long this takes, the teacher answered that with daily practice, it doesn't take long — and one should avoid entanglement with people who habitually cause trouble, along with negative speech and thinking, since these all add to impurity. The rate at which impurity is purified must exceed the rate at which it accumulates for it to gradually disappear; if accumulation outpaces purification, the impurity never clears and continues to have an effect. Sincere aspiration can help quell a particular instance, but the core issue remains keeping the rate of new impurity lower than the rate of purification.
Same Environment, Different Outcomes — Because of Different Karmic Ripening
The teacher added that even people living in identical circumstances experience different degrees of and suffering, because each is following the timing of their own ripening merit and demerit. If demerit is ripening, then no matter how pleasant the surroundings, one cannot draw benefit or happiness from them. But some people, even without pleasant surroundings, can find great happiness in small things because of the merit within them. When a bad experience occurs in daily life, the unwholesome often seizes that very point to keep bruising the heart again and again. What helps is abiding with nature, which can lighten the heaviness and eventually dissolve it, through frequent sincere aspiration — whenever such memories surface, recollect the Triple Gem and wish for that memory to fade away, wishing that neither we nor our relatives and dependents ever generate such unwholesome causes again. This kind of aspiration helps correct both the present and the future, turning what is bad into good, turning crisis into opportunity.
When Old Injustice Stays Lodged in the Heart — the Bond of Enmity
The questioner shared an account of a friend, a manager, who had been mistreated by a superior and forced out of a job more than ten years earlier — yet every converon still circled back to that old grievance, as though it were an unresolved wound.
The teacher explained that such apparent injustice sometimes traces back to a cause we ourselves generated toward that person in the past, and they are now returning the favor in this life — forming a bond of enmity between the two. Whoever holds greater opportunity or power at a given moment is able to act against the other. This is the unwholesome mind at work, storing up grievances and holding onto resentment internally. When that person dies, this mind state remains attached, and when reborn again in some future life where the sense-bases draw the two together once more, the conflict resumes — whoever holds more power in that life can act against the other again, an endless cycle of mutual retribution. The questioner shared that when facing similar situations at work himself, he uses — though initial irritation may arise, it fades with continued practice.
