The teacher explains that the unwholesome loves to blow small matters into big ones, keeping people from opening up to each other — whoever values the relationship should be the one to reach out first, with sincerity.

A lay follower relayed a question from a fellow member: when hurt feelings (noi jai) arise between family members or friends — say, one person meant well but spoke too harshly — the hurt party often doesn't say anything, letting it build up quietly, sometimes only telling a third person about it first. The question was how the two parties should resolve this, and who should be the one to reach out first.

The Unwholesome Loves to Blow Small Matters Into Big Ones

The teacher explained that the core of the problem lies in nature that does the directing. Given the chance, it seizes on something trivial and turns it into a major issue, poking at the sore spot again and again to wear down the heart and draw in demerit, gradually conditioning the person to accept and sink into that state — until they refuse to open up and talk, overwhelmed and sinking lower and lower. This is why, day by day, we need to pay close attention to detail by maintaining steady awareness. Once we hold that awareness, side lets us know how to resolve and fix the matter. Abiding within the wholesome system is therefore essential, because life has both a foreground and a background — the background guides how the foreground should solve its problems, almost as if the idea were our own. But if the unwholesome side is currently strong, an attempt to resolve things may seem to succeed on the surface while actually failing — this is simply how the mechanism of nature works. All that's needed is to remain within the wholesome system.

An Example: When No One Reaches Out First, the Relationship Breaks

The teacher shared a story. Once, at a cave temple in Mae Hong Son province, during an afternoon when he regularly taught to foreign students who gathered to listen, one student came to ask questions at his dwelling first, which took up a fair amount of time and made him late for an appointment with another student who was waiting elsewhere. That second student, not seeing the teacher arrive on time, assumed he wasn't valued. The wholesome voice within told the teacher to have the first student — the one who had caused the delay — go apologize on his behalf to the second student. Once the situation was explained, the second student understood and held no grudge. But had it been left unaddressed, with no one reaching out to explain, that student might never have returned at all. Small matters like this are exactly what the unwholesome tries to inflate into something large, causing the connection between people to break.

We Must Be the One to Reach Out First, With Sincerity

The teacher emphasized that we cannot wait for the other person to make the first move. If we value the relationship, we must be the one to initiate an honest explanation. When we begin with sincerity, the other person's own wholesome side picks up on that and reinforces it from within. The information we send must therefore come from genuine sincerity, because sincerity — or its absence — radiates outward as a wave: insincerity radiates as an unwholesome wave, sincerity as a wholesome one. The sincere message we send will be picked up by the other person's wholesome side, which reinforces and explains it on our behalf internally, helping forgiveness arise and the connection be restored. But how fully that connection is restored depends also on each person's karmic result.

Everything That Happens Is the Result of Karmic Ripening — But Abiding in Wholesomeness Helps Resolve It

The teacher added that the life we live each day is the ripening of past merit and demerit — merit ripens into good results, demerit into bad ones. The circumstances and events that appear each day are, in that sense, already set according to that ripening. But whether the outcome turns out better or worse depends on which system we abide in at each moment — wholesome, unwholesome, or karmically neutral. Abiding in the neutral system neither helps nor worsens things. Abiding in the unwholesome system leads us toward actions that bring suffering upon ourselves. But abiding in the wholesome system draws merit in to help refine and resolve matters, guiding us to understand how to fix the problems we face. So each day, we must train ourselves to abide within the wholesome system, refining and correcting mistakes before they arise, and making a wish to radiate toward whoever we're at odds with. When loving-kindness is directed this way, brightness appears at the center of that person's heart, helping clear away the impurities that cloud it, making it easier for their own wholesome side to guide them too.
