Walking it, we're guided and helped along by wholesome forces and inner beings of power, like a true friend, so liberation can come far faster.
To talk about the Eightfold Path, we first have to talk about , since the Eightfold Path is the fourth of these.
The Eightfold Path as Part of the Four Noble Truths
Every life fears suffering and instinctively turns away from it. But those with enough wholesome quality in them are guided to face it instead: to fully recognize the suffering present right now, then trace it back to its cause through the chain of dependent origination — ignorance, mental formations, consciousness, name-and-form, the six sense bases, contact, feeling, craving, clinging, becoming, birth, aging-and-death, sorrow and lamentation. Understanding this process is what allows it to be dismantled — cessation, through the Eightfold Path itself.
Right View Is the Foundation Everything Else Rests On
Everyone in the world carries an imperfect view, because three natures — wholesome, unwholesome, and neutral — are mixed together inside us, taking turns steering our thoughts. When Right View is incomplete, everything downstream of it — Right Intention, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, Right Concentration, and ultimately Right Liberation — stays incomplete too. The Eightfold Path is the middle-way practice that keeps growing the wholesome share in us and shrinking the unwholesome and neutral shares, until it reaches full completeness. As Right View matures, everything else along the path matures with it.
Why It's Our Truest Friend
Anyone who lives by the Eightfold Path lives within the wholesome system — and that system looks after them: guiding, teaching, encouraging, like a true friend standing beside them the whole way. Walking the middle path is never a solitary effort; the wise ones and the beings of power within accompany and support us, making liberation happen continuously and remarkably fast — enabling the attainment of the path, fruit, and nibbāna in as long as seven years, as a middle course seven months, or as quickly as seven days.
The Three Natures Rise and Fall
Asked whether the balance among the three natures shifts over time, the teacher confirmed it does — each of the three keeps trying to hold its ground, so the movement looks like an S-curve, rising step by step for those who dwell in the wholesome system. Understanding that everyone carries all three natures mixed together keeps us from blaming one another back and forth; instead we can stay even-minded, rejoice when others do good, and stay equanimous when others fall under unwholesome influence. This understanding is what turns simple merit-making into the deeper work of building perfections (bāramī).
