ทำไมบางคนเจอวิกฤตแล้วเหมือนถูกรุมล้อมจนออกไม่ได้ ทั้งที่ศึกษาธรรมะแล้ว?Why Do Some People Facing a Crisis Feel Utterly Surrounded, Unable to Get Out, Even After Studying the Dhamma?
He explains that when the sphere of demerit is giving its result, it grows larger and wraps around the sphere of merit, preventing it from showing its potential — the solution is to grow the merit sphere larger without adding new demerit or blaming merit for not helping, and he distinguishes liberation through mind from liberation through wisdom, both requiring virtue, concentration, wisdom, liberation, and the knowledge and vision of liberation together.
A student observed that people who come to the temple in times of suffering fall into four groups. The first practices as taught and survives, then intensifies their practice further so the same thing won't happen again. The second also practices and survives, but afterward returns to their old life, drifting more toward neutrality, coming to the temple only occasionally. The third practices as taught, but takes a long time to be freed because of anger toward whoever wronged them — only after releasing that anger do they find relief. The fourth group, the one he really wanted to ask about, is the group that, when trouble strikes, feels utterly surrounded, unable to get out at all, even though they've studied the . How can we help them?
Why some people feel surrounded and unable to escape: the sphere of demerit outgrows and wraps the sphere of merit
He explained that this fourth group experiences it because the power of is very strong, producing various crises in life — it's the moment when the sphere of demerit, like a delayed timer, has come due to give its result. When it does, a crisis follows — whether an accident, illness, an economic setback, or wrong views, resentment, and bitterness. In the period when the sphere of demerit gives its result, it grows larger than the sphere of merit and, since both share the same center, wraps around it entirely. The sphere of merit is a bright, clear, round sphere; the sphere of demerit is dark. Once demerit wraps around merit, merit can no longer display its potential — the quality of the merit-element that brings , draws in good fortune, or repels misfortune, simply cannot function. The larger sphere of demerit releases a stream that draws together various conditions according to demerit's preset pattern, and the sphere of ruin goes on destroying one's assets — whether appearance, wealth, , followers, or reputation.
The solution: grow the merit sphere larger than the demerit sphere — add no new demerit, and don't blame merit for not helping
What must be done is to make the sphere of merit grow larger than the sphere of demerit. Once demerit has opened its stream, it's like a phone battery slowly draining — it can't be rushed, and must simply run its course. But one thing that helps is accumulating merit heavily so the merit sphere can grow to match demerit — which requires not adding any new demerit (whatever old demerit exists, let it stay as it is, don't add to it) while accumulating new merit. But the demerit side will try to trap us: the first trap is blaming merit for not helping, even though the Triple Gem is constantly trying to help — its power to help is simply whatever it currently has. The wholesome side keeps trying to seize its turn, but its power is still smaller than demerit's, unable to overcome it outright, yet it keeps searching for ways to help and correct things regardless. The demerit side guides us to blame merit for not helping specifically to block merit from working, and to feel bitter about our own fortune — pressuring, crushing, and sapping our resolve, making us ask why this is happening to us. Whoever is behind that self-undermining voice — the answer is always the unwholesome.
What's needed is to still the mind, to make it stop, because stopping is itself the accomplishing factor. Once we set that intention, the sphere of stopping arises, and once established, it dissolves im and lets us move easily from one dimension to another. Keep setting that intention — still the mind, let go of suffering, don't dwell on it, because dwelling only clouds the mind, which draws impurity back in. Whatever opportunity for merit arises, take it fully — giving, keeping precepts, meditating. Even during a period when merit is already giving good results and life runs smoothly, we might neglect making merit because things are going well regardless — but when demerit is giving its result, we cannot afford to neglect it at all. Every bit of merit, small or great, must be made. The merit generated helps ease suffering, and the new merit made draws in old merit stored up to help as well — from heavy to light, from light to gone. But if the vein of demerit is still abundant, the crisis can continue regardless.
Liberation comes in two forms — through mind and through wisdom — requiring virtue, concentration, wisdom, liberation, and the knowledge and vision of liberation together
Liberation comes in two forms: liberation through the mind and liberation through wisdom. Impurity can be either a mental state or a wrong view; if the impurity is a wrong view, correcting our understanding to match the truth brings faster liberation — without wisdom, it's slower. Most bodily suffering arises from karmic results within the natural order, requiring medical care; but suffering of the mind lies in whether our outlook is correct and wholesome. These two work together and can be adjusted together, offering much greater help when combined. This is why we need to study virtue, concentration, and wisdom together — liberation exists through virtue, through concentration, and through wisdom; some things require liberation through virtue, some through concentration, some through wisdom, so all three must be learned, understood, and recognized.
The sphere of liberation already exists within us, but if we don't put it to use, if we don't genuinely wish to be liberated, liberation won't happen. Wishing to be liberated while failing to abide in virtue, concentration, and wisdom leaves no method for achieving it, even though the sphere of liberation exists — because it requires , understanding, and the creation of the right causes for that sphere to function and free us. Once freed, if we wish for an even better, more excellent, more wondrous life, we rely on the sphere of the knowledge and vision of liberation. Virtue, concentration, wisdom, liberation, and the knowledge and vision of liberation are all tools already present within of every human being — we simply need to learn, understand, and put them to use, and life will find happiness and freedom from suffering.
Why some people sink deeper into crises of their own making
A follow-up question came: some suffering seems to stem from external factors, like an economic crisis not directly caused by the person, and those affected tend to keep their resolve to fight on. But another, more troubling group faces crises that stem from their own actions — and they tend to blame themselves, leading either to suicidal thoughts, wanting to escape the problem, or to escaping into wrong views entirely. How can these people be helped, given that everyone makes mistakes at some point?
He explained that this happens because they remain under the continuous guidance of the unwholesome. When the sphere of demerit keeps giving its result, the unwholesome moves in and possesses the mind as house-owner. But not everyone whose crisis is giving result ends up guided this way — for some, manages to seize its turn, guiding them away from further wrongdoing. But for others whose prior mental foundation wasn't good, living in an environment conducive to the unwholesome, the unwholesome guides them toward drinking, gambling, falling under the power of greed, aversion, delusion, and lust, drawing in demerit continuously, pressing their elements lower and lower — the mind grows ever more clouded and sinks further, while the proportion of unwholesomeness keeps growing. This is purely nature's own mechanism shaping how a human life unfolds.
But for some people, even when the sphere of demerit has begun, or long been giving its result, the wholesome side still manages to seize control as house-owner, guiding them away from further wrongdoing, away from unwholesome interference, away from blaming merit or blaming fate — abiding instead in wholesomeness, which keeps advising them to live rightly and well, toward purity and liberation, letting merit arise and take root in goodness. That merit then comes to help correct things, from heavy to light, from light to gone. Every crisis that opens carries only a limited amount of energy within it. But if the unwholesome possesses the mind, it will guide toward drawing in more demerit, prolonging the crisis further, because every unwholesome act needs the sinful nature guiding it down the wrong path, almost like our own thought — just as the wholesome guides toward doing good, also almost like our own thought. What can help is relying on the knowing presence both within our own heart and outside among s and community — we need to learn, understand, and bring ourselves into alignment with the mechanism of nature.
