All three are needed together, because the system of wholesome mind steadily purifies the heart step by step toward complete happiness.
Someone shared Luang Pu's teaching on the fruits of giving, precepts, and meditation, and asked the teacher to explain further what realm each one leads to, and why all three are needed to reach complete .
What each practice leads to
Luang Pu taught that giving (dāna) leads to birth in the six sense-sphere heavens, bringing ever greater and more expansive happiness because giving carries us there. Merit from precepts () leads to birth in the Brahma realms, all the way up through the sixteen levels to the highest, Akaniṭṭha. Merit from meditation (bhāvanā) is the cause that leads to the attainment of nibbana. In short: giving succeeds as far as heaven, precepts succeed as far as the Brahma realms, and meditation succeeds all the way to nibbana.
Why we need all three together
This is the key principle: giving, precepts, and meditation are each essential to reach the fullest, most complete happiness. Giving alone only carries us as far as heaven. From heaven, precepts carry us further, up to the Brahma realms. From there, meditation carries us the rest of the way to nibbana, where the most sublime happiness of all awaits. It happens step by step, like this.
What giving is, and how the wholesome system works
Giving is caring for the world and all beings — only a good heart can share. And a good heart depends on the system of wholesome qualities taking root within us. When wholesome mind guides a person, someone with a calm heart naturally supports others through goodness — caring for parents, supporting monastics who cannot earn a living — out of gratitude for those who have helped them. The more we keep precepts, the more merit flows in to purify and brighten the heart, carrying beings upward through the heavenly realms, all through the power of giving as the foundation.
When a person's giving earns them respect and trust, they are naturally looked to as a leader — someone who sets fair rules to keep people safe. This is where precepts come from. Even in ages without Buddhism, precepts can still exist, wherever people genuinely wish for peace in society. As one lives with honesty, integrity, and sincerity, the light of one's precepts grows brighter, the heart grows calmer, until the power of craving can no longer take hold — giving rise to joy, happiness, and one-pointedness. The body-within-body is elevated from a heavenly body to a Brahma body, moving from the first through the fourth .
"Sīla" means "normalcy" — so there is wholesome normalcy, unwholesome normalcy, and neutral normalcy. Wholesome sīla is simply the normal state of someone living within the system of wholesome qualities, which guides in two essential ways: resisting evil, and doing good. Merit flows only through these two.
From knowledge to wisdom, and liberation
As one develops further inward, the inner knower points the way to an outer teacher versed in the science of liberation. It begins with gained by hearing (suya-paññā), develops into understanding through reflection (cintāmaya-paññā — genuine contemplation, not mere guessing), and finally matures into wisdom born of meditation (bhāvanā-mayā-paññā) — too deep for any textbook to fully capture, requiring the inner knower to illuminate it. This wisdom leads to disenchantment with sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches, seeing the suffering and danger in the world, and letting go into ever subtler states.
The 84,000 sections of the serve both sides: side uses them to lock people down and keep them bound to the world, while side uses the same 84,000 to unlock — from ordinary person to virtuous person, from virtuous person to noble one. Everything arises at the heart alone. When we align ourselves with the system of wholesome qualities, pure energy is drawn in to refine our inner elements, freeing us layer by layer, continuously — until the path and its fruit become something we can genuinely hope for.
