เอาชีวิตเป็นเดิมพัน กับสัจจาธิษฐาน หลักการให้ทานเพื่อให้สมบัติอัศจรรย์บังเกิดStaking One's Life and Sincere, Truthful Aspiration — The Principle Behind Miraculous Wealth
The teacher explains two essential principles for making great acts of merit: staking one's life through honest, sincere giving, and connecting with the Triple Gem through continuous, truthful aspiration — until miraculous wealth arises.
A lay follower shared, moved to tears, that she had wished to join in a large kathin robe offering with her teachers, and had tried various ways to raise the funds, but the money never quite came together. One day she and her partner decided to count and set aside all their savings for the offering instead. It came to 14,000 baht — not a large sum by others' standards, but she felt overwhelmed with joy, since it represented everything that had felt like security in her life. She wished to offer this merit to the teacher.
The First Principle: Staking One's Life
The teacher rejoiced in her merit and explained that making great acts of merit like this rests on two essential principles. The first is staking one's life — offering all the comfort, ease, and security of one's own life to the Buddhist religion, taking on the role of caring for the teaching in the Buddha's place, since he no longer has a physical body but we do, and we have material wealth where he has none in this world. We give everything we have in exchange for expressing boundless love and devotion. This is why the phrase "staking one's life" is used to describe building perfections — giving without wavering even when nothing is left. This is what proves the boundless power of the Triple Gem. Wealthy people often find this difficult, because giving away everything down to the last cent is genuinely hard for them; only those with modest means or just enough to get by can give without holding anything back, like a water bowl turned completely upside down, nothing left inside. When we give with a mind free of worry like this, the heart fills with joy, because the stream of merit flows in from the honesty and sincerity behind the offering, purifying the impurities that cloud the mind to a degree the mind itself can feel — this is why joyful tears of flow, often without one even realizing it.
The Second Principle: Truthful, Sincere Aspiration (Sacca-Adhitthana)
The second principle is connecting with the Triple Gem through truthful aspiration — relying on our own honesty and sincerity as truth itself, connecting with nibbana, the ultimate truth. We should make this wish again and again, with every breath in and out: to care for the Buddha's teaching to the very fullest, and for miraculous wealth to arise so it can help support the Buddha's disciples. As we hold this sincere wish continuously, it connects us with the Triple Gem, who then set the process in motion, transmitting a sacred stream of merit that purifies impurities and hindrances until the wish is fulfilled. When it is fulfilled, we will know immediately — much like the feeling of having eaten just enough to be full.
The teacher gave an analogy: if a phone costs 5,000 baht but we only have 4,000, no exchange can happen yet — the full amount must first be accumulated. Connecting with the Triple Gem works the same way: the aspiration must be held until the stream of merit is complete. Throughout this process, one should hold the mind joyfully and at ease, never with tension — relaxed, open, and light. When this is done, the Triple Gem will reveal its wondrous power for us to witness. But sometimes slips in doubt, asking whether this could really be true, urging us to hold something back "just in case." One must be careful not to hedge — instead, release whatever faith one holds fully, and continue until it becomes clear, of its own accord, that the wish has been fulfilled.
Truth and Aspiration: Two Things That Must Always Go Together
The teacher concluded that this principle rests on truth and aspiration as an inseparable pair. Truth is the honesty and sincerity behind the good cause we've already generated; aspiration is connecting with the Triple Gem through a genuine, heartfelt wish. Since we are born to care for the Buddhist teaching and to prove the wondrous power of the Triple Gem, we need material wealth, which the Triple Gem is able to grant — we need only set that connection in motion through truthful, sincere aspiration.
