A heartfelt resolution takes shape as an image in the mind and becomes a fixed blueprint lodged within our field of merit. The more often we repeat the resolution, the denser the blueprint grows, so success arrives more quickly and more fully.
Someone asked the teacher to expand on the elder monk's teaching about the "pre-set blueprint" (phang samret).
What is a pre-set blueprint
Our resolutions take shape as an image in the mind, which then becomes a blueprint fixed within our field of merit. If we repeat the resolution often, this blueprint grows denser, and success arrives quickly. But if we resolve only rarely, success takes a long time and comes only partially. We must therefore keep recalling our merit and reaffirming the resolution at , so the blueprint can ripen into actual results.
Merit lies behind all wealth and possessions; they all arise from the subtle assets drawn in from within our field of merit. This is why the ancients called a wealthy person "a person of merit" — within the field of merit lies every kind of asset: form, wealth, , followers, fame, praise, , the path and fruit of Nibbana, and of the kaya. These subtle assets are what draw the world's coarse assets to us, much as a magnet of a given size draws a corresponding amount of iron filings — according to the good we have accumulated.
The mechanics of the wholesome, the unwholesome, and the neutral
Doing good requires cause and condition. The deepest cause is the three natures — wholesome, unwholesome, and neutral — which use people, beings, and surroundings as conditions in their contest to seize our hearts. Whichever wins guides us to act according to its own aim. When wins, the stream of merit flows in automatically, whether or not we notice it, sustained continuously through backed by a wholesome mind. When a wholesome act is completed, we receive a reward called a "pre-set blueprint," made of three parts: the blueprint itself, the pure energy called merit, and the subtle assets that come with it — all sealed within the completed field of merit.
How to resolve effectively
When we give food to others, the merit that flows in carries five qualities: long life, radiance, happiness, strength, and quick wit. But if we wish for other kinds of fullness, we must add a further resolution into the brightness of that field of merit. Any resolution requires wisdom and broad vision — knowing what is truly beneficial, paired with happiness and , and serving as a cause leading toward the path and fruit of Nibbana. Every resolution needs merit as its fuel, which is why we often recall the Triple Gem or visit the temple, connecting automatically with Nibbana. Every good wish becomes lodged within the brightness of our field of merit, gathered within the field of Dhamma, managed by the Wheel-Turning Treasures — a lesser one for a small field of merit, a great one for a vast field. They draw in wealth and provide according to our blueprint and our wishes. If a wish exceeds our current merit, the Wheel-Turning Treasure will compound the merit further — which requires us to keep resolving, again and again, because every exchange in this world requires merit in full measure. Nothing comes free.
Sin, too, leaves its own blueprint
In the same way, unwholesome acts done with wrong concentration leave a blueprint of demerit sealed within a completed field of misfortune, waiting to be placed on the timeline of a future life. This is why some predictions about a life prove accurate — because the coarse results of a completed blueprint are recorded in our DNA, while the subtle results are stored within the field of Dhamma. What cannot be predicted is the ongoing contest among the three natures that has not yet reached completion — and this is exactly where resolving with intent can help. By recalling the Triple Gem and repeating our wish until the merit is full, the exchange takes place and what we long for is drawn toward us.
