He explains that the human world is a realm for creating causes, not for consuming results — so each day should be devoted to the wholesome, using the inner tools of virtue, stillness, and wisdom to purify impurities and reach an ever more wondrous life.
During an open invitation for questions, he expanded on the theme "the wise praise heedfulness."
The human world is a realm for creating causes
Time in the human world passes quickly, and it never passes empty-handed — it brings aging and the decline of the body along with it. Those building perfections in life must not let the body decline for nothing; they must build merit alongside the passing time. The older one grows, the more merit and perfections should grow too — this is what it means to be heedful in how one lives, to be born with real value.
The human realm is the crossroads for beings still circling through birth and death: those without enough merit for a heavenly realm, and without enough demerit for a lower realm, must return here to build merit and perfections. The human world is therefore a realm for creating causes, not for consuming results. Each person has a different amount of time on earth, but a day and night is the same for everyone — 24 hours. The question is whether we spend that time chasing amusement, or use it to create benefit for both the present and the future.
Whichever side you give your time to gets the opportunity to act
What we have now is the result of merit and demerit accumulated in the past. So the time we devote to any system in each present moment is precious. If we give our time to side, it will nurture , pure energy, refined attainments, and accomplished patterns within us. But if we give our time to side, it moves in and takes over, pressuring us into wrongdoing through body, speech, and mind, creating consequences for both present and future — pulling us to squander our precious time, resources, health, and clarity of mind on idle pleasure that brings no real benefit. Whether human or a being of any heavenly or Brahma realm, everyone needs merit as the energy that drives and sustains a good life; demerit, in turn, is the energy that drives beings in the lower realms through great hardship.
Use the inner tools of virtue, stillness, and wisdom for the greatest benefit
So it's necessary to use our limited time each day for the greatest benefit — abandoning evil, doing good, purifying the mind, and benefiting the world and all beings. The tools of the inner world are the spheres of virtue, stillness, wisdom, liberation, and the and vision of liberation. These refine our heart and mind and elevate our standing, drawing in pure energy to cleanse our impurities. Even if we can't yet see these spheres, it's like a blind person on earth who can still use a refrigerator, a fan, or a bathroom without seeing them — we only need to know they exist and learn to use them well.
On the outer, worldly level, we benefit others through generosity and kindness, helping the world and all beings find freedom from suffering. Virtue brings safety to ourselves and others; stillness frees the mind from the impurities that cloud it, keeping it clear; and the wisdom gained from studying the truth of the world frees us from wrong views, letting us live rightly and well. As we keep freeing ourselves from im, life becomes ever more wondrous — from an ordinary person to a person of goodness, from a person of goodness to a noble one, rising step by step through the noble stages until reaching the path, fruit, and Nibbana, ending the cycle of birth and death for good. These tools already exist within us — all that remains is to learn, understand, and put them to use.
