วิธีเข้าถึงองค์พระภายในซ้อนกันไปเรื่อย ๆ ทำอย่างไร และระหว่างทางมีอุปสรรคอะไรบ้าง?How Do We Reach the Inner Buddha Image, Layer Upon Layer, and What Obstacles Come Along the Way?
Pra Ajarn teaches the technique of expanding and shrinking the visualized Buddha image to keep the mind engaged until defilement thins and the process becomes automatic, and explains the obstacles tied to each level of defilement -- from impatience, through doubt, to the vividly realistic illusions that can appear once light emerges.
Someone asked: once sitting in meditation on Sammā Arahaṃ has stilled the mind enough to see the Buddha image at the body's center, what technique allows us to reach a second Buddha image layered within the first? And along the way from the first image to the second, what obstacles do new practitioners typically run into, and how should we handle them?
The Buddha Image We See Is a Visualization We Keep the Mind Engaged With
An inner Buddha image, layered within another at the body's center, is actually present at our center at all times -- we simply can't see it because it's obscured by covering elements. When we stay focused on our meditation object until the mind stills, the image appears -- but at this stage it's still a visualization, produced by our own mental command. Back when learning under Luang Phor, the technique taught was to command the image to expand larger, then shrink smaller -- even down to the size of a pinpoint, still visible -- simply to keep the mind occupied and focused on the image. That sustained focus is exactly what draws pure energy in continuously to cleanse defilement.
From Manual Visualization, Through Semi-Automatic, to Fully Automatic
As defilement gradually thins, the image grows clearer, more luminous, more radiant -- like dawn brightening into morning, the light multiplying from a single sun to two, three, eventually hundreds. At a certain point, once defilement has thinned enough, the image begins appearing at our center entirely on its own, with no command needed -- that's the automatic stage. Along the way there's a semi-automatic stage, where the image still needs to be summoned but appears with increasing continuity. The entire principle underlying all of this is simply thinning defilement -- nothing more.
Obstacles Match the Level of Defilement: Coarse Needs Patience, Middling Needs Effort, Subtle Needs Freedom From Doubt
New practitioners typically encounter obstacles that track the coarseness or subtlety of their remaining defilement. Coarse defilement produces real discomfort and difficulty, making practice feel unpleasant enough that we want to quit -- this calls for real patience. Medium defilement produces periodic irritation, keeping our sitting time from extending beyond where it's been -- this calls for increased effort. Subtle defilement, once the first two levels have been worked through, leaves the mind feeling open and empty, without happiness or light yet appearing -- which breeds doubt about why there's no further progress. The remedy is to keep maintaining continuous awareness without wavering, until that subtle defilement thins enough for happiness or light to finally emerge. Some people experience happiness first, others light first -- but eventually the two converge into a single, clear crystal sphere.
Once Light Appears, the Major Obstacle Becomes Startlingly Realistic Illusions
Once defilement has thinned enough for light to appear, the real challenge shifts to images that arise with striking realism, because whatever defilement remains will shape images according to what we secretly want to see. Someone wishing to recall a past life, for instance, might suddenly see something like a video, as vivid as actually being there -- when in truth it's just a form of mental proliferation dressed up with light. The remedy is not to wish to see anything in particular -- simply keep to whatever recitation or visualization technique has already been working, without switching methods, because what has been working will keep working. The unwholesome side commonly urges us to keep switching techniques precisely so nothing ever has the chance to succeed.
Real Progress Is Measured by How Much Time and Continuous Awareness We Can Sustain
Genuine progress is measured by how much longer we can sit, and by the quality of unbroken mindfulness and clear awareness we maintain. Even without happiness or light yet appearing, if we can sit for longer periods without the same hindrances disturbing us as before, that itself is clear progress. We should be content with where we currently are, and never doubt a method that has already been proven to work.
